Guest guest
Sangeetha - I agree that 99% of most western traditional specialists do not take a " whole " viewpoint of the patient. I guess I can understand part of that, in that if I go to a lung expert, I want someone who knows EVERYTHING there is to know about lungs. And in order for the specialist to know everything there is to know about lungs, they can't also learn everything there is to know about other parts of the body. Does that make sense? Hence, you have physicians who have graduated from medical school, and then they have gone on for additional years of school in certain " specialities. " For example, gastrointerology. Or endocrinology. My problem with our RSS daughter is that as we have all learned, so much of what our kids go through is interlinked. We need a doctor who sees the ENTIRE child, one who can see how the endocrine and the GI and the cognitive and the ENT and the orthopedics all fits together; one that is open to both homeopathic meds and traditional meds, when necessary. It is probably impossible to find such a doctor. Almost every endocrinologist I have ever met truly cares about " height/growth " and if you ask about your RSS child's GI/weight issues, they tell you to go to see a GI doctor. That is one reason we love going to Dr. Harbison in NYC -- she is an endo, but because she has about 130 RSS patients, she truly treats the " whole " child. However, she doesn't know a ton about homeopathic stuff -- although she is supportive of it in certain situations, and she encouraged me to have Dr. Dumont come and speak at the convention 2 years ago (head if GI at Loyola Children's Hospital in Chicago and also is head of their Integrative Medicine Dept). You need to find a good endocrinologist who has experience with other RSS children; you need to talk to him or her and ask what his/her viewpoint is on caloric intake/GI issues and its effect on height. If they say " nothing " , RUN AWAY. Growth hormone treatment is for far more than just height. At the MAGIC Foundation, we have all the studies on GHT and RSS/SGA kids, and you can get copies free as a member. But I truly encourage you to read everything. Do the research and then make your decision. GHT is not for every child or every family. Same with other medications. Some children's reflux is minor enough to be managed with diet changes and/or homeopathic remedies. Other children's reflux can only be controlled with prescriptive meds. Some children can take in enough calories with volitional feeding. Other children need a bit of help with an antihistamine that helps increase their appetite so they can still eat volitionally. Still other RSS/SGA children have brains that simply can't communicate to their bodies to eat enough (and/or they have compounding GI issues) and these kids need g-tubes. So you can see that there is a wide range of children and resolutions. Your daughter can absolutely benefit from homeopathic remedies. She may also need some help from prescriptive medications. I wish you the best as you begin your research. If you want to find out some good endos that other RSS/SGA families have seen in your geographic area, let us know and we'll try and get you some names. (MAGIC has a database.)
