Guest guest
: What type of immune system support are you talking about with the enzymes ? Is it something like Transfer Factor to boost the immune or another type of supplement? There are so many that it is confusing. Is TF an enzyme or are you talking about Enzyme/Peptizyde that help boost the immune system? Thanks, Sharon

Guest guest
> I may be asking this on the wrong list, but has anyone successfully used enzymes & then been able to go OFF the gfcf diet?? I am not so sure it is the wrong list, but rather the wrong question of " enzymes vs diet. " I don't see these as battling forces or choices. Actually they are quite complementary. With the extreme difficulty of ensuring the necessary 100% GFCF, enzymes offer a way to fill in the gaps, and relieve a great deal of stress on the family. We are one family with three people that have been able to use enzymes (Peptizyde and Zyme Prime) in lieu of eliminating food. You still need to watch out for GFCF sources that enter the body by other means - skin, breathing. However, this was our choice and not every one wants to go that route. Enzymes have other beneficial properties besides food digestion. One is gut healing properties which plague many AS individuals. Often after casein and gluten are eliminated the gut is still injured by other foods, and so the person then " becomes " reactive to whatever he is now eating a lot of. Using a regular program of enzymes helps to heal the gut, thus all foods become less irritating. Several people on the enzyme board are finding this to be the case after about 3 months of regular use. The time for healing a leaky gut is usually given at 3-6 months depending on the individual, so this follows the same timeline. Karyn Seroussi said that about 1 in 5 people on a GFCF diet can eventually leave the diet, presumably because the gut has healed. Although this is a minority, it is still 20% of all people on the diet. So if using enzymes just breaks even with this, that would mean 20% could leave the diet. However, enzymes tend to do much more than just break down the peptides (which is wonderful in itself) so I would suspect a much higher percentage of people able to leave the diet, should they choose too. A lot of people who are on the GFCF diet are REALLY on the GFCF, soy- free, corn-free, phenol-free, sugar-free, etc-free diet. Using enzymes can at least reverse this trend of ever eliminating more foods and start healing the gut and expanding the menu. Another property of enzymes is immune system support, which a lot of AS individuals need. Energy levels are increased as well with enzymes. .
