Its the best thing you will ever do for yourself. I was very determined and

would let nothing stop me. he whole process for me tok 4 weeks from start to

surgery. I was very lucky.

I am 43 years old, male, and a big whimp when it comes to pain. I would never

even consider this type surgery in the past. The Laproscopic approach

intrigued me as I am a nurse by profession. Even worse a Surgery nurse. Guess

a little knowledge can really hurt.

After reading the packet and doing some research, including getting

literature from some of the other physician names you see in the chat room

(Like Champion in Atlanta) I decided this was the least invasive way to go,

and the way for me.

I immediately made an appointment with my Dr. And printed a copy of the

entire manual, as I was sure she proabably wasn't up on this procedure. She

was very supportive and did the pre-op lab right away. SHe also wanted a CXR

because I smoked.

The packet was long and involved, but every bit important. I even had to

re-do my letter, as I didn't follow the directions..... MAKE SURE you put the

headings in your letter.

Before I knew it I was approved by Dr. R.. Now I must admit I was denied by

my insurance, as they said there were local Dr's in the area that would do

the open procedure. I cashd out my retirement and paid cash. I will appeal

and fight the insurance co. now that its over.

Clinic was alot of fun. Dr. R. is a great person and really puts you at ease!

Seeing the previosu weeks post ops is another big plus, as they can tell you,

fresh memory and all how it was.

Again, I was scarred to death of pain, I just couldn't belive that it wasn't

going to be the worst thing in my life to ever experience. Well surgery day

came, and the people at Durham were FANTASTIC. Notables include Sheila the RN

in the holding area, and and on the 5th floor. Look for

them, They are the best!

My surgery took 35 minutes. I dont remember anything until I woke up in my

room, I kept thinking, I wish we would get this over and done with. HA.

Little did I know it was all done. I remember looking at my family and saying

" What are you doing in here in the holding area " . They said I was all done

and I said " Yeah right I wish " .

They had to lift the blanket and show me my stomach. I couldn't believe it.

I kept saying why dont I hurt, didn't he do anything ( Poor Dr. R. he gets

blamed even when we have no pain.)

Within 2 hours I was walking the halls and drinking juice and jello. It was

the easiest thing I have ever done. DID I MENTION I AM TERRIFIED OF PAIN!

Honest I am the last person in the world who would lie about it. I went home

Saturday Morning. No Pain, Never any Nausea, Never any vomiting. Amazing.

I walked to the Food Lion on saturday, as I heard walking was the best.

Sunday I went to a craft fair the mall and BOWLING!!! No problems at all.

I am now 11 days post op. I have had All flavors of jello, All flavors of

yogurt, Apple Juice, Tomotoe Juice ,Orange juice, Chicken and Beef Broth, the

broth of WOn ton soup at the mall, Tomatoe soup, the liquid of split pea

soup, crackers (saltine) and even a few of the soup crackers in my tomatoe

soup. I have never had one ounce of nausea, pain or vomiting.

Its hard to tell on all the liquids. I have to be careful and stop at 3-4

ounces. You really dont get that full feeling, but they say that will start

after I start eating. This friday is a big day, as I can progress to oatmeal,

mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, cottege cheese, etc. I can't wait.

Okay and the best news of all,,,,,,, I am 11 days post op and have lost 21

pounds.

I started at 364 and today was 343! I was so excited today at work I thought

they were going to tie me down.

I still have a small amount of bruising on my left abd port hole site, but no

pain. This has been the easiest thing I have ever done. And oh Yeah, the

surgery does funny things to ya. It changes your taste. The sound of a

cigarette is awful. I havent had one in 2 weeks, and don't plan to have any

more. I think Dr. R. slips something in the Anesthesia..... But he'll never

admit it.

Well I hope my experience helps you somewhat. please feel free to e-mail if

youhave any other questions. Its great to be " on the other side " and a

contact.

Good luck and keep us informed

Hey Bob,

Saw your post. I referred someone to you the other day I have them your email

address. She is a nurse.

Glad to hear everything is going fine.

My doctor is getting his letter ready for me tomorrow I am looking forward to

sending my pack to Dr. R. I have so much confidence in him and his skills as a

surgeon. I keep getting success stories from others and I am looking forward

getting to the other side.

I plan on a lot of jello myself. I am going to clean off my old blender so I can

puree things.

I'd like to know that answer too. Also, do you have a list of doctors in

County or Prince County, land who believe and support this

operation. I'm getting extremely frustrated trying to find a doctor that

truly understands my situation and who wants to make me healthy for the rest

of my life -- for goodness sakes, I only have sleep apnea, hyperglycemia,

hypertension, hypothryoidism, Irritable bowel syndrome, extreme migraines,

extremely high cholesterol and tryclderides, depression (of course), and over

a 100 pounds to lose. My dad died of heart disease, my brother has diabetes

and both my dad and mom of high blood pressure. Isn't that enough to want to

save someone's life instead of piling them up with pills and having to sleep

with an oxygen mask every night. Please if anybody can help me, please,

please let me know of a doctor in my area who is sympathetic to those who

want to live! Thanks and sorry for rambling. It's just so darn hard.

Hi all,

It's been 3 months since my surgery on 7/17/00 and I wanted to give

y'all (can you tell I'm a southern girl)a quick update on my progress.

I'm down (drum roll, please) 49 1/2 lbs. and 34 1/2 inches. The only

downside is that 6 of those inches have come off my chest. I'm

starting to see some hair loss, but nothing I can't handle. My brain

is still trying to catch up with my new tummy. I have found that 3

meals a day don't work very well because my tummy would start hurting

between meals. It took me a while to figure out that my new tummy was

hurting because it was hungry(imagine that). So, now I try to eat

fruit or veggies between meals. For a while, I went through this

phase where I couldn't find anything to drink that I really liked. I

was a big iced tea drinker prior to surgery ( 3 glasses per meal). It

doesn't appeal to me now, so I drink water or sugar free lemonade

mixed half and half with water. I have no desire for anything sweet

now. Right after surgery, the watermelon and sugar free popsicles

tasted really good, but now everything is so sweet I don't want any

of it.

I saw a couple of posts about chicken salad making people sick and

I've experienced the same thing. I can eat chicken, but not chicken

salad. Some days when I eat, meat settles on my stomach better than

vegetables. Other days I can't tolerate the meat, but the vegetables

go done beautifully. I guess it all comes down to listening to your

body.

I have 5 lbs to go and I get to put a 1 in front of my weight instead

of a 2. You will all know when it happens cause I'm going to let out

a big shout. It's finally starting to sink in that this change is

going to be permanent. I'm actually starting to think about what it's

going to feel like to be thin. I have hope for the future.

Dr. R., you saved my life, both physically and emotionally, and I

will forever be in your debt. Don't ever let anyone tell you that

what you're doing is wrong. You are making a tremendous difference in

the lives of all you patients. May God's blessings shine on you

always.

Hi , Nice to see your post. You are doing so well. I would run that

question, about the queasiness, by Dr. R. Could be there is an easy fix,

like more fluids. Could be a med would help. Don't know, but I'd ask.

Plus, I'm sure he'd like to hear from you and hear of your wonderful success.

Hi,

That " morning sickness like pregnancy " is a give away.

The nausea could be resolved with an estrogen patch.

Hi !

Good to see you post. I've been wondering where you were...

First off, you need to let Dr. R. know about the queasiness. You might need

some estrogen for that.

Secondly, the difference in eating from one day to the next seems to be

universal. I know I have the same problem. I guess it depends on what our

body's needs are at any particular time. Yes, we can stretch our pouches,

but not as readily as some other surgeries. So while we need to be aware of

it, as long as you are eating in moderation and not totally stuffing

yourself, you are probably ok. Of course, I stand to be corrected if need

be. :-)))))

Great weight loss!

Bren, Hi

My name is Betty and I had the MGB on 9/29. Like you I get up every

morning queasy and sometimes during the day. My own doctor says that is low

blood sugar and I will feel that way when my stomach is empty. I have found

that eating a snack before I go to bed helps some. I buy those little packs

of 4 crackers with a little thingy of cheese and stick to spread it on.

They work so good. I am almost a month out and have lost 23 lbs. Good

luck to you.

and I also like to carry nuts, or a mixture of dried fruit bits and nuts.

Hi Nicky,

we give our son Gummi Vites from Trader Joes. It's the only ones that he will

take. I don't know about the liquid drops. There is Poly-Vi_Sol, but i don't

know if it is GFCF or not
