Mark I hope you turn the corner on this soon. You are of great help to

me. I really appreciate the articles. I helps me be more informed

about my disease and makes it easier to communicate it with my doctors.

Hi Pat,

Certainly this is a MAJOR surgery, do you know the name of the surgery that

the doctor intends to do?

Is it a modified Whipple surgery? How long is the surgery expected to last?

Surgery on the pancreas is very delicate stuff, as it is a very fragile

organ. It's very flimsy, easy to cut but very hard to sew.

Have you or your son had a second opinion?

Is the doctor and/or hospital very familiar with this surgery?

What is the expected outcome from the surgery?

FWIW, I had a modified Whipple in 1986, 3 days in ICU, total of 15 days in

the hospital, and a total of 5 months recovery before returning to work.

A wedding in June, that may be a little iffy, might think about a

postponement at this time. The wedding is likely doable, but generally there is

a lot

that goes with a wedding. Activity might be limited.

I'm not trying to throw cold water on the plans but just trying to provide a

little advice from my experience. My modified Whipple was done in April and I

got married by the courthouse judge in August (extremely small ceremony). Went

to the Red Lobster for supper, then went home and went to bed alone. That was

all I could do.

Hope others chime in with advice and opinion

Best wishes, poncho - GA

Welcome to the group and good luck with the balance of your tests and

insurance approval. It seems like it's a long road and to some it has been.

Hope

yours isn't too long or complicated. Take care and again welcome.

we're glad to have you join us. My doctor said

I would not make it to 40, and would more likely die

because of my weight and not the surgery. I know

how you feel. My insurance is covering it, but it wasn't

easy. I hope you don't have a hard time with yours.

Talk to ya soon.

Hi ,

Welcome. You & I are pretty much in the same place. I had my initial

consultation with the surgeon last week & will be going for pre-op & psych

evaluations on September 1st. Then comes the " fun " of the insurance approval.

My surgeon feels that with all the medical documentation I am getting, both from

my PCP & my orthopaedic surgeon, approval should be fairly certain. He is

planning to do the surgery mid October.

Best of luck in your persuit.

They said it was a covered benefit. But I know it can't be that easy. I am

Thanks again. .

what part of PA are you from? I'm from Lancaster PA and I'm in the

process of getting surgery

Hey .. My name is Alana. I'm from Pa.. I'm 5'10 and 403. (413

was my highest weight). When I first got into the whole process

before the surgery I was scared to death. But I just kept looking at

the whole package.. I was more terrified of dying from being over-

weight. I'm still a little nervous, not as bad as in the beginning

though.. Surgery is coming up (Sept 21), can't believe only about 29

more days.. It's crazy, now its the day to day, *damn why can't it

be tomorrow* feeling. What kind of insurance do you have? I was one

of the lucky ones, all together between the first time I've talked

to my surgeon to the date of the surgery, only been about 3-4 months

and my insurance covered it without a problem (KNOCK ON WOOD, cause

you never know..) Also, they cover a tummy tuck down the line after

you lose 80-100 pounds.. Anyway, I'm babbling.. Just want to wish

you a quick and steady start on your way to a new life..

Welcome to the group. There is more information here than you can imagine.

There is no question that I have not found an answer for. I like you am over

400 and know that I have to do this or face major problems down the road. I

know that we will do this. Good luck and keep us posted on the tests and

insurance.

Alana,

Great! We'll plan when it's a little closer. I marked your date on my

calendar so I wouldn't forget. I know people who have had Open and they have

done

fine also. You are going to do great! It's sometimes more about mindset than

anything. Go in with a positive attitude! That's one of my biggest

suggestions. I am doing great! I'm feeling wonderful - mentally and

physically. I'm

still me on the inside, the me that should have always been on display...not

the one that felt like she had to hide who I really am. My attitude never

matched what I looked like. I think the psychological aspect of this surgery is

almost as important as the physical. I actually think that programs/surgeons,

etc. should do a little more on the psychological end of this surgery. Any

way, sorry I got off on a tangent there. I'm very happy and I would do this 10

times over if I needed to.

Can't wait to see you soon!

Crozer after your surgery? Are you having lap or open surgery? I can't

remember. I would love to come up and be there to support you.

I would love to meet up sometime after my surgery. I'm having my

surgery done as an open surgery, I believe its because a lot of my

weight is in the stomach area, therefore it would be more difficult

for the instruments they use for the Lap procedure. Either way, I'm

having it done and that's all that matters.. Counting down the

days.. Seems like you are doing great.. 5 months and 90 pounds

down??!! That's fantastic..

Hey, I have had the surgery 4 months ago, and I wished my nutricionist had

talked to my dietician because she was wrong in many things. For example:

She told us not to eat peanuts, but my Dr said that peanuts are a good snack

I was told peanuts are a good food too, high protein. Of course we have to

Maybe after your stomach heals but right after surgery could really

upset your healing. My doctor limits corn, string beans, celery

etc. for that reason.

Do you mean that you are throwing it up because your body won't let it

in, or are you causing yourself to throw up? If you are causing

yourself to throw up that is bulimia. Just not sure which you mean.

okay i have some questions.....what is the protein train?? i know

it's where you load up on proteins, obviously, but what does it do

and what all do you eat on it. and sometimes i eat something and it

hurts so i throw it up, but i force myself to do it, and it happens

a lot, i know i need to eat smaller bites, chew chew chew, and slow

down but it's like i want to eat it so bad and so fast bcuz i am

hungry and it looks and tastes good, and sometimes i eat something

with carbs in it like crackers, then i throw it up, and eat more,

then throw up again so it's out of my system...i knwo that is

considered bulima, but how much do you have to do that before it is

considered bulima? and i don't do this all the time either like at

every meal, i don't do that.
