Not

all digestive enzymes are legal, it depends on what active and non-active

ingredients are included. And there is no way of knowing which brand of

legal-appearing digestive enzyme will be tolerated by your particular body

systems and state of health. It is certainly true that there are less

illegals included in digestive enzymes than in other supplements. However

we always have to check the ingredient list.

I

was curious to see what ingredients were in Theramedix SPS30, as I am always on

the lookout for a digestive enzyme that I might try (have had terrible luck

finding on my body will accept). So I checked.

The

only ingredient on the list that I haven’t seen in other digestive

enzymes is Seaprose. It sounds as if it should decrease mucuous and

inflammation, not generate more. Seaprose is a “semi-alkaline serine-proteinase

produced by the fungus Aspergillus melleus” But I can also guess

that this additional ingredient might cause a reaction such as gas and mucuous.

One

of the things I look for in a digestive enzyme is the suffix –ase.

The fact that Seaprose ends in –ose may or may not be an important point,

-ose means sugar (carbohydrate) in most cases, but it can also mean a

protein derivative. –ose is “a suffix used in chemical

terminology to form the names of sugars and other carbohydrates (amylose;

fructose; hexose; lactose), and of protein derivatives (proteose).”

In any case, you won’t know for certain whether it is the

Theramedix SPS30 or the milk thistle causing increased symptoms for you. I’d

guess that the milk thistle is a more likely candidate for your problems, but I

also know our bodies react in unexpected ways to supposedly beneficial

ingredients. I’d stop the milk thistle for a week or two or three and

see if you improve. If not, then switch to another digestive enzyme

without the Seaprose, and see if that works better for you.

If

there are no fillers, etc., and the capsule is legal, are all enzymes legal?

I'm specifically asking about Theramedix SPS-30.
