Hi,

I know how you feel!

Actually Emerence's pediatrician said she was structurally okay to turn

around at about 19 lbs. I am in MA.

This may also be due to the fact Emerence, like me, got carsick. She

did much better facing forward. I however, (was diagnosed at 3 months

of age - runs in thefamily!) have to drive (I don't do well as a

passenger) and the 3 hour flight to Chicago alone with Emerence is

torture because I don't feel comfortable leaving her alone even with a

flight attendant. AND, they took my med off the market so now I have

new pills but Chicago will be the trial run and if they do not work I

am in trouble....

Sheryl,

I also turned around to forward facing before he reached 20

lbs. Like Kim said, if I had waited until he was 20 lbs., he would

have been 2 years, 7 months, and 19 days! LOL. I think we turned him

around when he was close to 18 lbs. It was safe for him because he was

strong enough at this point, according to his doctor. I guess it is

were your comfort level is. We switched him to one of those car seats

that can face either way and turned him forward. The reason why the

doctor gave us the advice that was probably okay to turn forward

is because would spit up and gag all the time, and I wasn't

comfortable with him facing backwards because I couldn't see him. He

did this all the time, so the doctor told us to turn him forward so

that I could keep my eye on him. also had breathing issues and

would need to be watched for that reason also. So, I think it is a

personal choice, or a safety choice in our situation.

Hi Sheryl,

We had the same problem with Olivia but we couldn't turn her

forward. At 18 months she was just learning to roll over and crawl

and only 15lbs. Any way we finally turned her forward when she was

3yrs 2mths old. She was 18lbs but we got a note from both the Dr. and

the Health Unit explaining everything.

In our province we have Car Seat Check Stops. We just got stopped

at one yesterday! They check that the carseat is installed properly,

straps are correct and that the teather strap is installed. They also

weigh the children. The Health Unit does the checking but the police

pull everyone with kids in the car over and do the ticketing. A lady

there had 2 things wrong and was arguing over her $400.00 ticket! I

think it's great because it's our childrens safety at stake.

So if she doesn't gain anytime soon and her muscle tone is okay,

especially her neck, I'd look into getting notes written that you keep

in the glove box.

Hope this might help.

Sheryl,

My peidatrician told me the same thing not till Maddy is 20 lbs. However

I was later told that it's 20 lbs or a year old which ever comes first. So I

bought her a real good car seat ( not booster seat) and turned her around.

And good thing i did cause madison just reached 20 lbs this month and she's

gonna be 4 in August. So can you see a 3 1/2 year old rear facing????

Use your best judgement. I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

Here in Georgia the law says 1 year AND 20 lbs, whichever comes

last...but, I'm gonna ask the doctor for a note soon...she does not

gag or get carsick, so I guess we can wait a bit longer...

I was told by my ped that it is 20lb AND 1 year of age. However, the reason

they do this is because of their neck muscles. He told me that since was

18 months old and getting close to 20 lb that we could turn her around because

of her age he believed she had the neck muscle strength.
