Guest guest
Hi, Warning: this is very long and detailed. Read at your own risk! So, I'm 1 month into the diet, and I've been battling with the correct dosage of probiotics and some crazy changes in BMs. So, this is how it went: I started with 1 Acidophillus capsule a day starting on Day 5, and I was constipated at the beginning of the diet, but on Day 8 I had a bowel movement, and went a little each day for about 5 days. I had also increased my constipation meds (Amitiza) 2 days before I had a BM and also started drinking prune juice and orange juice in the A.M. On my 6th day of having BMs, I went about 3 times, and that time was more brown than the previous BMs (which were thin and yellowish). At that point, I had ambitiously gone up to 2 pills a day, both on an empty stomach. That caused a lot of bloating, so despite my good day of BMs I figured it was too much. I replaced it by taking teaspoon of Almond Milk Yogurt for 2 days - this caused a lot of die-off. I had more yellowish BMs again and some smelly gas, along with a return of my flu-like symptoms that I experienced in the first 10 days (this was day 18). I realized later that I put 1/8 tsp of the starter with only like 1 quart of milk instead of 2 quarts. I took a break for 2 days, and then tried 1 Tbsp of a mixture of the Acidophillus tablet and 1/4 cup of water for about a week. About 4 days after I started the 1 Tbsp a day (on an empty stomach in the morning) I noticed mucus in my stool for the first time, along with mushy (i think this is the right term) stools. And then, about five days after that, I had diarrhea for the first time - and I did not have diarrhea before I started the diet, my problem was constipation. So I stopped the probiotic completely, and now I'm on my 5th day of not having any. BUT over the past 3-4 days, I've noticed increased cravings for bananas - wanting more and more of the smoothies I make in the morning. I've stopped putting honey in the smoothies, but still am having cravings. The banana craving was a lot more intense in the first 7 days of the diet, they would make me absolutely insane with the sugar rush. But the fact that I am craving them again in any way is giving me cause for concern. And then last night, I had about a 1/2 a cup of Almond Milk for the first time, and the intense sugar high of the first 7 days came back again! I was confused about this, because don't bananas have more sugar than almond milk? Maybe not. In any case, I've been racking my brain about this, and this morning during my acupuncture session, all the sudden I realized: this could be related to stopping the probiotic. At some point in this process, someone told me that as the bad bacteria die off, the yeast can sometimes take their place and then go crazy about the sugar I'm eating. So, I was thinking that without the good bacteria of the probiotic, the yeast is gonna be bad. The reason I went off of it was the appearance of the mushy stools/mucus and also I had diarhhea three times I think. I thought this could be a sign of die-off? Especially because the third time I had it, it was the morning after I had coconut oil for the first time in a couple weeks, which also causes die-off, correct? Actually, the coconut oil could have killed some more bacteria and that's why the yeast is wreaking havoc. But then again, doesn't coconut oil eliminate yeast? I guess I had yeast reactions 1-2 days after I had the coconut oil, but its strange that it would cause yeast. I guess stopping the probiotic and having the coconut oil happened very close to eachother, so it's hard to tell. But then again, the bad reaction to Almond Milk happenened last night, and I would think the effects of the coconut oil would have dissipated by now. In any case, I guess the best plan of action would be to start at a really small amount of probiotic (1/8 tsp) and try it with food. I'm thinking my original problems with it could have been due to eating it on an empty stomach. WOW. That was intense. If you read that entire thing, you're amazing. I am pretty sure that staying off the coconut oil and intro-ing the probiotic with food is the best course of action. Any other thoughts? Guest guest
I should also add, that I'm still having urgency/mushy stools, but no diarrhea since Monday. Also lots of gas that precedes BMs > > Hi, > > Warning: this is very long and detailed. Guest guest
I always take my L. Acidophilus supplement with food. Actually I take every medication and supplement with food, at the end of the meal/snack. Otherwise I get reactions, usually immune responses but sometimes other body systems are affected in an undesirable way [grin]. Unless I’m on antibiotics, my maintenance dose of L. Acidophilus is one capsule every 3 to 4 days. I’ve discovered that small but regular doses of probiotics, or any supplement for that matter, is better for my body. Things are absorbed better, my immune system remains quiet, my nervous and digestive system behave themselves… I go with the minimalist approach, always. Kim M.
