Guest guest
Hi Carol, Do you know why they are not recommended for children? I had bought some for my son, but I stopped giving them to him when you answered my email (about a month or so ago) with this same information about not being recommended for children. Is there a probotic that you recommend for children? He eats the 24 hour yogurt, but not everyday. Thank you! Guest guest
The Kirkman Labs lactobacilus acidopholus is a great choice. Guest guest
Thank you Patty, as usual you are a wonderful help. I am going back to Mexico City and my daughter and Anya will be visiting me at the end of november. So I wanted to take some yougurt starter with me now to be ready when they come. I went to Wholefoods here in Durham and found Yogurmet starter, so I bought several, they do not need refrigeration and I know they are legal. There were plenty of Friendship farmer's cheese packages but unfortunately we cannot take cheese to Mexico. Since Anya was diagnosed and started the diet I have not been to Mexico so sif anybody in this group know of a mexican legal farmers cheese, please let me know. Where can I buy the SCDyogurt starter? Thank you again Anya's grandmother Anya UC Dec. 2005 SCD diet May 2006
Guest guest
Dear " Anya's Grandmother " .... Just a note.... my Yogourmet starter package says it recommends it be kept in the refridgerator. I think it's fine to travel with it unrefridgerated, but once you get where you're going.... it would be best to store it in the fridge. I'm sorry I don't have any other answers for you as to where you can buy those things in Mexico. Perhaps Lucy can ship to you in Mexico from the U.S.? www.lucyskitchenshop.com I buy the starter from her by the case. best wishes, Patti Re: Re: yogurt starter Thank you Patty, as usual you are a wonderful help. Unfortunately I do not think we have somthing like that in Mex. City. She will have to eat it until her mother brings the good one. She is about to investigate if she can travel with curd, yougurt, etc. If not, we will have to feed her probiotics and broth and everything legal but no yougurt. She has had a relapse and will be soon on Prednisone again. Thanks everyone. Araceli
Guest guest
Yes the All Natural Dannon with no sugar or additives is legal and works great as a yogurt starter. I've also heard that the greek style yogurt Fage is a good legal starter and makes the yogurt less tart but I haven't been able to find Fage yet. Guest guest
Hey all,I'm having a little trouble finding the full fat dannon, but I found the fage, but fage only has two strains? the l. bulgaricus and s. thermophilus? no acidophilous or l. casei? what do you guys think about this? http://www.zeer.com/Food-Products/Fage-Nonfat-Greek-Strained-Yogurt/000094788I was disappointed when I realized the GI prohealth starter didn't have acidophilous. I'm wondering what the ideal yogurt starter is for us? Thanks!! Thank you. No, to make yogurt, you need s. thermophilus, l. bulgaricus, AND l. acidophilus. (or l. casei, in place of the l. acidophilus) — Marilyn
Guest guest
Fage is legal. If you use Fage plus Erivan yogurt (which is letter checked out legaland a fantastic product), you will be perfect:http://erivandairy.com/default.aspx(Erivan yogurt is made only with acidophilus). Guest guest
The two bacterial strains required to coagulate milk and make yogurt are L. Bulgaricus and S. Thermophilus. Some SCD-legal yogurt starters also include L. Acidophilus or L. Casei. In the case of the Fage yogurt, it is OK to use the legal one that just contains L. Bulgaricus and S. Thermophilus, but since you also want L. Acidophilus you’ll need to also take regular doses of a legal supplement containing just L. Acidophilus. Kim M. I believe that they add a couple capsules of legal acidophilus to the mix when using it to get the acidophilus in there. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Thanks everyone I got some fage and I'll have to keep a look out for erivan. How much acidophilous do I dump in? A whole pill? (3 billion CFUs)? Is that enough/too much? How much fage do I put in? If I find erivan, how much of that do I put in? Thanks!!Also, for folks who add fruit, do you put it in the yogurt maker, or add to finished yogurt? If you put it in the maker, can you cook the fruit first? If undercooked fruit is a problem, can you use juice? Thanks so much!!Best!p.s. oh man I finally tried grass fed butter today - WOW does that make difference!!! Hi, I used Fage as starter. Very very very yum yogurt. And very rich, even undripped. Found making it in oven w lightbulb on worked beautifully. Put my yogourmet away. I wouldn't store them together, just add it when you are about to serve some to yourself. but others may do differently. and cook it as much as you like first. > > Thanks so much!! > Best! > > > p.s. oh man I finally tried grass fed butter today - WOW does that make difference!!! yep -it's delicious. Guest guest
No, each one is a box with several - I forget how many - starter packets for 6 or 8 quarts x 3. And with the subscribe and save, the price goes down to $10 and change and free shipping and no hassle of going out shopping for it. It is pricier than using Dannon - but I like the yogurt better and also, I never managed to get through anything like an entire dannon package before it went off - they seem to have stopped making the dannon in less than the big package - you can't buy it as an individual size any more, as far as I could find, at least not around here. And after two weeks or so I was leery of it. So it works out to comparable, IMO. > Hi, > > I'm confused.
