Guest guest
You may want to do a site search of . I believe there were some complications with some of s patients that you would want to be aware of. Some docs are really comfortable handling patients with problems and seem to know what to do others are not. Just type in in the search window of the DS yahoo group page and every post with his name with come up. I can't remember all the specific info that was posted. Guest guest
I'm mostly a lurker, but I have to step in here. The surgeon you are talking about with MGB is not Dr. , you are speaking of Dr. Rutledge. Dr. Rutledge was performing large numbers of MGBs, my understanding from discussion lists is that in addition to performing surgeries like a factory w/ little concern for the people he was working on, he was also not coding them appropriately for insurance and was sanctioned so that he can no longer obtain insurance coverage. Dr. is in Winston-Salem. He has been performing RNYs for some time and has now done approximately 35 DS procedures. One patient of his recently died (the only death he has had). From the discussion list of his patients, my understanding from her spouse and friends is that no other surgeon would take the risk of operating on her due to her very high BMI; he agreed to work with her and she, and her family, knew the risks. I have seen posts from her husband, who does not appear to hold Dr. responsible for any negligence whatsoever. I have had a consult with Dr. two weeks ago (actually, the day this patient died). I found him to be very respectful and informative. He was stressing the dangerousness of the operation itself (not surprisingly, given the circumstances) and really trying to make sure I understood the procedure, what the after effects are and what I would be in for.... I would encourage you to join the discussion list specific to his patients (gastricbypass-wsnc ) which I have found very helpful. Also, there are TONS of comments about him on obesityhelp.com. Doing both of these helped me pick him as who I would like to work with (if my insurance gives me an exception on that dreaded exclusion -- but that's another story). Anyway, I really liked Dr. and his patients appear to be very loyal and appreciative of him (unlike what I hear about Rutledge). I didn't want them to be confused. Also, if you go to his website he lists where he trained and who he trained with..... _____________________________________________________________ Message: 16 Date: Mon, 08 Oct 2001 20:06:28 -0000 From: marym@... Subject: Re: surgeon I agree with checking out this surgeon. There are some successful patients of his around here. However, I am very cautious about him. Earlier this year he did the notorious " MGB " which is a Billroth II procedure that causes deadly bile reflux and was abandonded 30+ years ago for WLS. He then decided to do the DS, and as far as I have been able to determine, got no instruction on this at all. I've seen more than one post about his RNY post op patients with terrible complications. If I recall correctly he has had a dreadful complication rate, has had to convert lap to open surgery more often that I was comfortable hearing, and has had some bad complications with his post ops. That isn't to say that there aren't complications with all surgeons. We morbidly obese are a very high risk populations. But you might want to as exactly how many DS surgeries he has done, how many had complications and where he learned to do it and which surgeons he uses as resources for his DS work. Many of the DS surgeons talk to each other and check out concerns, problems, and techniques. I know that he has a faithful following and has done other surgeires (such as hernias, gallbaldders) for grateful patients. But it isn't the individual success I'm talking about. But rather the overall stats and willingness of a doc to do that which may be harmful to a patient and not necessarily with good training. These are my opinions only as I have monitored and read about DS, RNY and MGB surgeons for more than a year. in Seattle > You may want to do a site search of .
