Guest guest
Barbi, THANK YOU!!!!! I just called and have an appointment scheduled with Dr. Ren on January 7th at 2:00. I asked how long the wait was for the surgery presuming all would be okay, and was advised approximately 1 month. I'm excited because all this would fit into my timeframe. Even insurance wise, effective January 1st, my COBRA plan switches to Blue Care Elect Preferred which doesn't require a referral from a PCP. I was originally planning on having a RNY, but after much research would prefer this procedure. So..., you were in the same position as me as far as the job and Cobra coverage. It's pretty unnerving being unemployed, but I figure now is the time to take care of myself, and get my life and health back in order. As you can appreciate it's bad enough with the impact being so obese has on one's health, but when it is also impacting my ability to obtain comparable employment to my former position it's really scary. How long were you out of work? How soon after your surgery did you find a job? Any words of encouragement and/or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, ann Re: DS doctor close to New England? Hi ann, I was in the EXACT same position you are. I wanted to get my surgery done quickly as I was on Cobra and it was good coverage. Didn't want to take a chance on getting a company that wouldn't pay. From the time of my first consult to the time I had surgery took less than a month, but there's a catch. I had surgery with Dr. Ren who has just begun the Surgical Weight Loss Program at NYU, therefore she wasn't booked up. Unfortunately, although I had the DS, Dr. Ren isn't doing the BPD/DS anymore, she's doing the BPD which is similar but it is a different surgery, some say it has the same results, some prefer the DS. If you are interested I'm sure you can find some info on the net. One of the gals on the DS site had a BPD ten years ago, here is a link to her page. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hi ann, Wow, Dr. Ren must be getting busy if it's two months to a consult now! I called the office and left a message, and I also posted to Dr. Ren's Yahoo group, asking if she does the DS at all anymore. When I hear I will let you know. Unfortunately I think her website is out of date. Just in case, might I suggest that you also make another appointment with another surgeon? Just to be safe? If she isn't doing the DS, and you want the DS, you won't lose valuable time. Since you have done a lot of research you have prolly heard of the BPD, I would urge you to read up on it so that, if nothing else, you know the pros and cons. As for my employment situation, I was working as a temp so I took off the full four weeks, and then I didn't even go back full time for another couple of weeks. I was WHOOPED! I lost 60 pounds in the first two months and just walking to the couch from the bed was exhausting. Job hunting is never fun, at least I don't think it is, lol. I continued to temp for a while because I just wasn't emotionally ready to even go to an interview. You might consider it, it's a viable option for employment, especially in the short term. You won't get rich but it brings in some money. Best of all, it's flexible so you can work when you can work. If you'd like to join Dr. Ren's Yahoo group it's at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NYUMC-thinforlife It is a very small group and there aren't many posts in a day, or a week for that matter! It's comprised of all Dr. Ren's pts, not just the DS's. There are several ladies there that know more about what Dr. Ren is doing than I do. And I agree, now is a perfect time to take care of you. Barbi So..., you were in the same position as me as far as > the job and Cobra coverage. Guest guest
Thats great news ann! I would try to call her just to verify in advance that they won't try to switch you to something else when you get there! Congrats on the quick appointment!
