I am having a little difficulty with gas and sometimes running to the

bathroom alot...BUT I do live a normal life. I think it has to do with food

and I've not narrowed it down yet. I usually have 2 or 3 in the morning when

I'm getting ready for work...those are the most for the day usually. I do

sometimes go during the day once...and sometimes at night 1 or 2 times...but

again its due to what I'm eating...I'm pretty sure and I had IBS before

surgery and I think a bit of stress is there right now...that makes it happen

more. But I have alot of days when the morning is the only time. I think

you shouldn't worry...there are things you can take for it, I've never had a

situation where I couldnt wait till I got to a bathroom...and I'm just now

playing with things to get it all normal. I suppose I should try some fiber

stuff...thats my next step!!

I'm almost two years post-op, and this is not true for me. My normal

routine is that when I wake up in the morning, I'll have a BM right

away, then another one within a few minutes after that. Then, I'm done

for the day. In the evening, I may or may not go again, depending on how

much I'm eating. I think in the long run the only change you might have

to make would be perhaps to set your wake-up time a bit earlier to

accommodate the morning BM(s), and most likely you will be fine during

the day at school.

Mind you -- this applies to " post-recovery " routines. In the first few

months after surgery, your BMs are likely to be fairly loose and

unpredictable. Unpredictable may or may not include " urgent " . But as I

recall, in the first 8 weeks or so, when I had to go, I had to go! I

never had an accident, but I pushed a family member out of the way a few

time in my single-minded haste to get to the potty. :-) Fortunately,

this is a temporary phenomenon. After the initial recovery, you should

find that your BMs are pretty regular and not urgent. You'll have a new

" normal " as far as consistency, odor, and perhaps regularity, but most

probably nothing intolerable or detrimental to your quality of life.

I know of several DS post-ops who are teachers, and they too were

concerned about the same things you are concerned about -- they are

doing fine in the classroom. If you would like me to put you in touch

with them, let me know. It might ease your mind to communicate with a

post-op teacher to hear from them how they are doing.

Hope this helps!

M.
