Ya Know, it is funny-- every time I try to get up and walk, my knees

hurt, my back hurts and I am generally more and more miserable the more I

walk. This is the essence of " negative conditioning " . So how come

Docs see it and think it is a great idea for fatties as a tool in the

RNY, but can't see how it is working to keep me on the couch or in a

chair and not out there doing stuff?

Sounds familiar. <G> When I began researching, I knew about RNY but that

was all I had ever heard of. It was really a challenge trying to talk myself

into the RNY, it sounded like a fate worse than obesity in a lot of

ways...but it was all I knew and I was desperate. The thing that irritates

me most is that mere mention of DS is discouraged and even forbidden on some

OSSG lists. So how are we to let people know that there are other (and yes

*better*) options out there?

Best of luck to you in your approval for whichever of the weight loss

surgeries you choose. We should all be grateful that we have a

choice at all.

I know the DS is " marketed " in some circles as a surgery that is

preferred for the super-morbidly obese. I don't really know why,

except that the research shows that it offers the greatest percentage

of excess weight loss. I guess the reasoning goes that the

super-morbidly obese are in a more desperate situation than just the

morbidly obese and therefore need a more " drastic " solution than what

the RNY (or another surgery) offers. Methinks 'tis a bunch of

bull-ca-ca, but such is the rationalization being used by patients,

insurance companies AND doctors.

I've also heard the DS referred to as the more drastic of the weight

loss surgeries. I don't agree with this (personally, I think the

Fobi Pouch is the most " drastic " ), but again I think the reasoning is

that it isn't more " drastic " , it is just a more difficult surgery to

perform technique-wise. A surgeon needs more training and there is

greater (surgical) risk. As a result, there are fewer surgeons

offering it. Also as a result, it is less widely available.

Another DS " fact " is that it carries more risk of malnutrition.

Well...HELLO?...the other surgeries (except for BPD-only or

distal-RNY) do little-to-nothing to the absorbing part of the

anatomy: the intestines. Of course the risk is higher, but the

research shows that patients who are compliant with their vitamins,

supplements (calcium, etc) and bloodwork are doing fine.

I'm 260 lbs and I'm getting the DS. I wouldn't touch the RNY with a

ten-foot pole. :)

I was thankful there was someone on the Obesity Help site that posted

her profile about getting the DS. I never had heard of it. I was on

my way to the fobi pouch, knowing I needed to do something--even

though the thought of eating that way for the rest of my life

depressed and terrified me.

That is why I have a profile there too, and I try to update it

monthly, because I want a testimonial to be there for others

researching. I would encourage everyone here to do the same---every

little plug for the DS is great. I even put links to Mel's DS site

and to the yahoo groups.

We can have a quiet revolution of education and realism--when people

are first researching--if they are truly curious minded--will be most

open to information about the DS. That was how you got me!!

In Florida we have no DS doctors. There are so many RNY docs you can

practically turn around and trip over one. I thank God every day I

saw Heidi's story on AMOS. Like most of us here I'd only heard of the

RNY. When I saw her story and saw the odd procedure listed I followed

her link to her www.mywls.com site. Her comparison chart just knocked

me out!!

When I started discussing this with my docs here none of them knew

anything about the DS. I've had to educate a LOT of doctors, nurses,

dieticians, etc... Now, the ones who do view this as a better

procedure send patients my way or ask me to speak with them about the

differences. Maybe someday soon some Florida RNY doc will wake up and

ask for training in the DS. We can only hope. In the meantime, I try

to make sure that anyone who is interested in WLS knows there IS an

alternative.

Thanks, Heidi!

it's their fault for not doing enough research, and they pay a price

for their stupidity, but in SOME sense, doctors are to blame as

well. It is not ethical for a doctor not to inform his or her

patient about ALL wls options, even superficially or in a biased kind

of way.~~~

Yes, I have someone to thank as well. Our very own Magruder,

who, as I've already told her, helped me learn more about the D/S

from her postings on the AMOS board.

SUCH an intelligent, thoughtful, and well-spoken (written) woman is

Thank you, . See, just when I'm about up to here with the online

stuff, somebody like you comes along and sucks me right back in with a

little reminder that something I did was helpful to them. THANKS A LOT!

And my poor lonely hubby thanks you too. LOL. ;-)

I hear you, woman: this online stuff MUST get tiring.

I can't FATHOM how you do all the work you do, what with negotiating

this group AND doing the D/S site. The work you have done and

continue to do is charity, pure and simple. Helping others IS what

God tells us to do and you are heeding that command (intentionally or

not) to the benefit of your own soul and others. There is no greater

work than charity. I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that you

have helped change many, many lives for the good, including my own.

<continue to read: NO sarcasm in the above>

God bless you,
