Guest guest
Its funny you bring that up. The other group I subscribe to one of the Mods is an RNY post-op a few years out I think and she is considering being revised to a DS. I think the woman who made this statment is just mis-informed. And as soon as I go through that digest for those months I will report back to everyone! Thanks again I appreicate the vote of confidence from you! Lisbeth chull1@... wrote: Lisbeth, On the other hand I found a posting of an RNY person who regained, was revised to DS and succeded. I have yet to hear of any DS patient being revised to RNY and succeding. Food for thought (so to speak) Hull ---------------------------------

Guest guest
, That is an interesting point you raise. Hopefully I will learn soon enough the real story and I will report back then! Lisbeth mariak415@... wrote: Hi Lisbeth, I've heard that it does and can happen. However, without the whole story it can't be put into proper perspective. If someone eventually gains back 45lbs, is that good or bad? Is that 45lbs 10% or 50% of the original loss? Personally, if I gain back 10% of my original loss, I'm not going to be crying in my coffee, because that would still put me somewhere around 150 (and I'm *really* guessing, as I'm still pre-op). From what I understand it is not unusual for some weight regain. However, I've never heard of a DS patient regaining anywhere NEAR their to their original weight like I have seen with RNY, VBG, etc. The nurses have told stories of people who have regained: a man who owned two Mcs franchises and regained 40-odd pounds...a Pepsi driver who switched from diet to regular and gained 15lbs...etc. The idea is, I think, that there is a reason for the gain...it wasn't just " oops, the surgery isn't working anymore " . We know that in the long term, the body adjusts to the malabsorption and some bodies may adjust " better " than others. However, without knowing the original starting weights and losses for those people, I can't put those gains in the proper perspective. Maybe the Mcs guy was 500lbs, lost 300 and gained 40?? Who knows? But it does happen. ---------------------------------

I only found a couple of accounts of > weight regain, one with BPD only (Sharon, a 10 year veterun) and one > BPD/DS. I think each regained about 30 lbs. The one person who had > the BPD/DS and regained admited that she was eating tons of sugar. I have found that some folks aren't even sure WHAT they had done and may misrepresent that in message (most likely not deliberate). There was a woman on OSSG-Hungry who states she had a DS with a small regain, but her signature line on other messages indicate that she's a distal RNY. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ossg-hungry/message/7994 " I have the DS and I have regained 14 lbs despite diligent exercise and careful eating habits...simply because I can eat more and more. Almost everyone I know who has had my version WLS has regained around 10% of their weight at 2-3 years post-op, and we have all had severe distals (10 feet) with BPD. " And then here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ossg-hungry/message/3140 Sig line: " Distal RNY 03/02/98 Was 296 lbs. Now 148 lbs. " Perhaps she doesn't realize that the DS is a distinctly different procedure. Who knows, but it is unfortunate that her inaccurate statements could mislead people who don't key in to the contradiction. Guest guest
Hmmm while I agree that she is not trying to decieve anyone intentionally. I can't see how she can think that both surgeries are the same.....
