Guest guest
I was reading the new book out on Obesity Surgery (I cannot remember the authori's name was at a friend's house) and one of the many listed " disadvantages " of the DS listed was " severe protein malabsorption " and " severe iron malabsorption. " Does anyone know anything about the iron?? Plus, all indicators I've seen do not say " sever " malabsorption of protein -- it's a matter of degree granted, but 20, or even 30% malabsorption does not seem " severe " to me -- but the iron I wonder about -- do we have to supplement iron?? ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Ms. Hawkins Pre-op / BMI 61.5 / 250 to lose 150 is my hope someday! ~~~~~~~ hoping soon for a switcheroo ````````
Guest guest
Hi I was just at my 2 year postop appointment and had the opportunity to ask Dr. Anthone these questions. He does not routinely perscribe iron to all his patients, however, he does suggest all patients take 1000mg of calcium, and suggests Viactiv. If he's finding someone might be very iron deficient, then he will perscribe some iron. Personally, I was iron deficient as long as I can remember and always took iron supplements. I have not taken any since surgery. My iron levels are in the normal range. They are on the low end of the scale, but in the normal range. I'm not sure if this is because of the prenatal vitamins he perscribes, or if it's because of the protein I eat. Probably a combination of both. My protein levels have always been right down the middle. Dr. Anthone said I only need 40-50 grams of protein without additional supplementation. I've found just because it's in a book, doesn't make it so. Anyone read Carnie's book? Hope this helps.. heidi http://www.mywls.com
