Guest guest
Karola, In NYC I found Ensure either online on www.drugstore.com or at most major supermarkets. No prescription required. I don't recall the cost of it being exhorbitant, just that it was sickly sweet and I couldn't tolerate eating too much of it. I would try using protein powders that are tasteless and can be added to drinks, soups, and other food. Guest guest
Here, in Alabama, anyhow, they're available at grocery stores and drug stores. They're cheapest at big discount stores like Wal-Mart and Target -- at least that's where I've had the best luck. Boost had some 8-packs of bottles that I actually snagged at less than $5 a pack, but that was one to celebrate! Guest guest
I wanted to add that Ensure may not be SCD compatible, and won't work like SCD, but for someone who is losing weight, Ensure is a good source of nutrition. It may be a lot easier to tolerate than solid food for the gut. I know that before I started SCD, I was using a lot of Boost, and it kept my nutrition going and was a lot easier on the gut than a regular diet. However, eventually I had to eat something! SCD was the way I was able to build up my diet. I believe Ensure may give some relief and nutrition for the short run, but it is not for a long period of time, and will not bring about the results and true nutrition of real food that SCD does. Ensure will not address the gut bacteria. It may help with some of the symptoms in the short run. PJ > > > > >>> I have read the ingredients on Ensure. How can that contradiction be explained? Elaine makes a reference to this fact in her book, but provides no explanation. She actually uses the fact that enteral nutrition works, to explain why SCD works. I don't have the book with me..maybe someone can find that reference. It is in one of the first chapters. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > > >
Guest guest
I cannot advise either way since I have been in situations (pre-SCD) where I needed Boost. However, take into consideration the first 3 ingredients of both: Boost: Water, sugar, corn syrup solids Ensure: Water, Corn Maltodextrin, Sugar (Sucrose) -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 25mg Predisone > > > > > > >>> I have read the ingredients on Ensure. The elemental diet which Elaine refers to used monosaccharides for the carbohydrate source. Ensure does not. My suspicion is that the reason it may be effective for some people is because it completely eliminates the polysaccharides, which significantly reduces the bacteria food. So many people, pre-SCD, are starch-o-holics. I couldn't use Ensure... it has soy protein in it, and I do not tolerate soy protein at all. In fact, I'm extremely suspicious of soy because of many studies indicating that it's just not good for us. What I would do is work with a clinical nutritionist to develop something homemade, within the parameters of the SCD, which meets the needs of the individual. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
Ensure is full of vitamins. I used it a *lot* pre-SCD. It (imho) would be hard to find a nutritionist who could do what Marilyn suggested unless they are familiar with CD and Ensure. The one nutritionist I saw was looking up the dz as I entered her office then spent most of the time reading to me about it. Maybe one of the SCD counselors who has it all broken down could do a consultation if that's what you need and sometimes you do. Debbie 40 cd On Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 12:38 PM, Wizop Marilyn L.
