Any recommendations beside OT? >Presently we do hand over hand but he is so limp. I worry >because writing is a major part of life. , My son was very delayed in writing. He could not write his name until age 5 1/2. At age 5 1/2 he started taking adderall and was able to write his name the next day. Also, our OT used a program called Handwriting Without Tears (www.hwtears.com), and we use this at home, too, since we are not getting OT anymore. My son is now 8, and not on adderall any more (contains lactose). I just started cursive with him, since he was having so much trouble with printing and he is doing very well with it (and loves it!). Cursive helps with the problems of size and spacing of letters, so in a way it is easier than printing. Anyway, back to the Handwriting without Tears program, they have some wood pieces that you can use to teach your child how to form the letters. For example, Letter B is " long line, little curve, little curve " . Also, gross motor activities involving the upper body are good for developing handwriting muscles, some examples are: wheelbarrow walking, shooting the trigger on squirt guns, skywriting, writing in shaving cream (good bathtime activitiy), etc. Since you mentioned your son's hands are limp, you might want to spend a lot of time doing play-doh and things like that to build strength.
