First of all I am in Holland, Mi. Ph . Call me any time.

I hope I was only being sarcastic about my government. However, Please consider the following. The powers that be--perhaps only misguided bureaurcrats--and not political appointees have selected out an age group that were exposed to the swine flu in the 1970s. Perhaps this is not based on a lie and only on a very bad assumption. One has to assume that every person living in the United States in this select age group had to either had swine flu or enough contact with swine flu to have built an immunity to swine flu. Think about this. Today's swine flu is not reaching everyone so they might build an immunity for some future swine flu outbreak and many folks in the select age group were not exposed to swine flu in any way during the 1970s. I never heard the name swine flu during the 1970s; however, I am classified as immune to this flu. So I will live like house bear this winter.

I would urge any citizen of the U. S. to study what happened to the volunteers at ground zero following 9/11. I am told most of these folks are suffering severe pulmonary problems at this time. Our government turned their back to any responsibility for their health care. The same government told them the air at ground zero posed no health risk.

I am 69 years old so I fall into the same group as you. I don't like it either. I'd love to get the shot just as much as you. Try to look at it this way, we are ALL in this boat together and its leaking, unfortunately not enough life boats have arrived yet....So lets let the pregnant women and children go first and we'll unfortunately have to wait for the next boat. It will come,it should already be here but, its not. So we'll just have to wait and hope and pray it will get here in time...... Its not comfortable, but its something we must do. Then, we should do what ever we can to make sure it doesn't happen again.

you are right about the ground zero stuff and we can go on to discuss other times of goverment coverups have taken place, nucular in the 50s, agent orange, etc., etc but to what end?

i like the way you compared this to the "titanic"

i am more concerned about my pregnant daughter and my grandchildren than myself regarding h1n1

some people from ground zero have already died from pulmonary issues

To All:

I am new to the group and this is my first message so bear with

me please.

My wife is recuperating from lung cancer. It left her with

radiation and chemo damage to her lungs so she is on oxygen and two

inhalers. I have IPF and am participating in the Phase III Bosentan

experimental drug trial. We live in Arizona and are both 77 years

old. In previous years we went to the head of the line for flu shots but

this year discovered that while we could get the normal flu shot we were to go

to the end of the line for the scarce H1N1 shot since we are over 65. Our

pre-existing conditions offer no priority as far as H1N1 is concerned.

I discussed this with our pulmonologist. He explained that

the H1N1 virus was much different than the other “normal” flu viruses.

Other viruses are seasonal while H1N1 is not. It occurs during all 12

months of the year. We know little about it. We have observed that

it mainly attacks infants and younger people. It has been observed that for

some unknown reason people over age 65 very rarely get the disease. The

best theory is that at some time in our past we were exposed, perhaps more than

once, to a flu bug that was so similar to HiN1 that it conferred immunity on

us. This being the case, we no longer fear for our well-being and are

content to see our grandchildren in line ahead of us. We have had our “normal”

flu shots, per the doctor’s recommendation, and will get the H1N1 shots after

the supply is sufficient, probably by the end of November. But the fact

that this is “normal flu season” is meaningless because H1N1 has

been active all year long.

Jack McVickers...Welcome to the

group.

As we say here...glad you found us...sorry you needed to!

Most of us have spouses who take care of us in some way..

Many of us also take care of them too! That's the deal with marriage..

good and bad!

My husband has cluster headaches which incapacitate him sometimes for

months at a time.

When they hit, he starts taking Prednisone..I already take it...so we

have to be really careful not to

get on each others nerves...emotions get really exaggerated!

He's gone through several surgeries in the last couple of years and

we've needed to have outside help

but that's what needs to be done.

With My NSIP ( form of Pf) I need 24/7 O2 and many medications and

loads of rest time in between

anything that might seem active. He's retired now so he's able to help

me more.

Often, he's the chief cook and bottle washer and shopper too.

At other times I'm able to do that.

Again, Welcome to the "Air Family" and take care of yourself and

give hugs to your wife too!

I'm 99.9% positive that you WILL be eligible for an H1N1 vaccine once the initial supply problems have been resolved. When the supply is very short those at the highest risk get 'first dibs'. As hard as it may be to believe, small children and pregnant women are at higher risk for dying from H1N1 than a man or woman in their 50's 60's or 70's with an underlying medical condition. That doesn't mean we aren't at risk. We are. It's just that my risk, your risk are lower than the average 4 year old.

I'm sorry you find that US to be "one big and very ignorant island". That's a fairly harsh assessment but you are entitled to your opinion.

I would urge you to continue to pursue H1N1 immunization. I hope you can receive your dose very soon. Take care of yourself.

Jack,

Welcome to Breathe Support. You and your wife have so much on your plates right now, it makes my head hurt to think about it. You will both be in my prayers.

Thank you for that very clear and succinct explanation of the H1N1 situation. Your understanding of it matches my own and everyone who wants a shot will be able to get one in a matter of a few weeks. In the meantime it behooves us all to be cautious and take extra good care of ourselves.

In previous years we went to the head of the line for flu shots but this year discovered that while we could get the normal flu shot we were to go to the end of the line for the scarce H1N1 shot since we are over 65. Our pre-existing conditions offer no priority as far as H1N1 is concerned.

I discussed this with our pulmonologist. He explained that the H1N1 virus was much different than the other “normal†flu viruses. Other viruses are seasonal while H1N1 is not. It occurs during all 12 months of the year. We know little about it. We have observed that it mainly attacks infants and younger people. It has been observed that for some unknown reason people over age 65 very rarely get the disease. The best theory is that at some time in our past we were exposed, perhaps more than once, to a flu bug that was so similar to HiN1 that it conferred immunity on us. This being the case, we no longer fear for our well-being and are content to see our grandchildren in line ahead of us. We have had our “normal†flu shots, per the doctor’s recommendation, and will get the H1N1 shots after the supply is sufficient, probably by

the end of November. But the fact that this is “normal flu season†is meaningless because H1N1 has been active all year long.

Bob and Beth:

First of all I am in Holland, Mi. Ph . Call me any time.

I hope I was only being sarcastic about my government. However, Please consider the following. The powers that be--perhaps only misguided bureaurcrats- -and not political appointees have selected out an age group that were exposed to the swine flu in the 1970s. So I will live like

house bear this winter.

I would urge any citizen of the U. S. to study what happened to the volunteers at ground zero following 9/11. I am told most of these folks are suffering severe pulmonary problems at this time. Our government turned their back to any responsibility for their health care. The same government told them the air at ground zero posed no health risk.

I have an appointment to get the H1N1 next Tuesday ONLY because the people at

the Mullen clinics in AZ and the Maricopa County Health Department screwed up

originally and advertised on their sites that the clinics they had were for

kids, pregnant women and people 24-64 with underlying health conditions. When

they wouldn't give one to me in October I emailed and complained royally. Some

person on their last day called me on Monday when I was at NJH and said they

would give me one but basically they were making all sort of special exceptions

for me and made me feel like I was gonna kill legions of children by stealing

that one shot. I still called them today and just got off the phone with a

woman who again made me feel like I would sealing the fate of hundreds of

children by doing this. Yeah right! She did not like that I could give her

chapter and verse on my condition, that I knew they had originally put it on the

website, and that I really didn't care what her opinion of me was. I will get

the shot next Tuesday and feel a whole lot better.

Just got off the Maricopa county website which has a breakdown of people who have died from h1n1. Out of 48 people 38 had underlying conditions such as asthma, cancer, heart disease, lung disease, immunosupression, obesity and diabetes, 25 were over 50. Only 8 were children.Dyane>> I have an appointment to get the H1N1 next Tuesday ONLY because the people at the Mullen clinics in AZ and the Maricopa County Health Department screwed up originally and advertised on their sites that the clinics they had were for kids, pregnant women and people 24-64 with underlying health conditions.
