Guest guest
Terre, The first boat I was on was the Barbel SS-580. When she was sold for scrapping in California, the scrappers began the process and stopped due to the massive amounts of asbestos found. Subsequently, she was bought back by the Navy and then used as a target off the coast of San Diego. Does make a person wonder though. Oh well, life happens. One of our leading PO's died a couple of years ago from asbestosis. He also was in the ship yards during construction and was a plank owner. I don't believe that I was exposed to too much asbestos because we always had the tender do the majority of the work. I know you can get it from just being around it but don't remember much exposure. I've often wondered about the elevated CO and CO2 levels. Plus in my case as an ELT I did water chemistry on the reactor water and was exposed to radiation during upkeeps. But like Ken,I put mercury on coins and carried them for days while rubbing to feel the slickness. Sat around the diesel in lower level AMR2, smoked Lucky Strikes for 9 years ( some while on the boat), cleaned chicken coops a couple of times, had a parrot, (argh!) love sports car racing with it's gas and rubber fumes, on and on it seems. I think I know which idiot they are talking aboubt in IPF.A "breathe right" sub vets sounds good to me.Terre, IPF, 6-08, FL, MM1(SS)> > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > I don't know if this is just a product of the state I live in or if> > > > > > > > there is some substance to this.
