Bettye,

If only we could answer that question....lol the truth of the matter is that no one really knows which if either is the case. The reality is though we often lump all pulmonary fibrosis together pulmonary fibrosis (lung scarring) is one facet of over 200 different interstitial lung diseases.

There are doctors (Dr. Raghu in Seattle is one of them) who believe strongly that some IPF is actually caused by uncontrolled or poorly controlled GERD. It is true that most people with pulmonary fibrosis also have at least reflux, if not full fledged GERD. I had reflux and was on Nexium and omeprozole for a couple of years. It turns out that my reflux was likely caused by prednisone and recent tests show that I no longer have any reflux at all and I'm in the process of weaning off the omeprozole.

So the answer is....we don't know. It may be that some pf is caused by GERD though it's not been confirmed. Research is in progress. It is common sense that uncontrolled reflux or GERD could make pulmonary fibrosis worse by having acid inhaled into already compromised lungs. That underscores the importance of keeping reflux under good control.

Whether some types of interstitial lung disease also cause gerd or other GI problems is also an open question. The truth is there are alot of open questions. Frustrating isn't it?

Hi everyone,

Hope that you are having a wonderful weekend and to those of you with increasing health burdens, I send my most positive thoughts and prayers for your comfort and strength.

My question today is about GERD. my ILD is thought to be drug induced from Microdantin. I was diagnosed in June of 09 and discontinued the Microdantin immediately of course. My GERD has been under control up until the last few days. I take Nexium daily.

My question is...(a chicken or the egg type) Is GERD a symptom of PF or it is exacerbated by PF? Does PF cause GERD or does GERD cause or exacerbate PF? I read that so many of you are experiencing GERD so thought that I could get some enlightement on this subject. I am presently on no medication except for the Nexium.

MB...hmmmm, I didn't know it was necessary to "wean" off of omeprozole...prilosec. Thanks for the info.

Dr Raghu wants me to take particular care of any gerd problems. I was on the Prilosec and stopped taking it. My 'stomach' problems stopped so I stopped the Prilosec. guess now I will resume.
