Guest guest
Val,How long have you been on the Asacol? It is a maintenance drug and if it isn't working, you might taper off of it and see if it helps as the side-effects are the same symptoms as UC. Also keep in mind that you are at that 9-12 month flare mark. Have you tried going back to intro foods?AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Thu, May 6, 2010 3:56:39 PMSubject: Medication Question Hi, I have been having cramps and D for months and in the last 2 weeks it has gradually turned to severe cramps and blood. Just a bit, but still, it is painful. I am going back to my GI and we will be discussing new medications. I am 99% sure he will try to get me on steriods. I would like to avoid them at all costs. I have been trying to get pregnant as well, which hasn't been working. So, I ask you which drugs are out there that you guys recommend. I have always reacted very well to new drugs. I would like something it would be safe to get pregnant on. I believe someone had recommended I try something that starts with an L. Thanks, Val SCD 11 months asacol 4000 mg mom of Penelope
Guest guest
thank you for your absolute honesty. I am sorry that you had to go through so much on top of feeling like garbage! the doctors don't tell you about the side affects, they just send you there. I am so afraid of giving in too soon or not soon enough. > > > > So, please tell me why the prednisone sucks. Guest guest
You're welcome. I hope that you don't have to go on them but if you do, just keep telling yourself that they will help you heal and hopefully you'll be off them soon. It's true, the docs never told me about prednisone side effects. I don't mind them not mentioning side effects with some other drugs but prednisone causes such extreme reactions that you'd think they would prepare you for it and not leave you to wonder why you're suddenly mad at everyone for no good reason. But then again people might be a lot more reluctant to go on it if they knew what they were in for . I worried about going back on it when I had a massive flare this past summer. So I dropped down to the starter diet and waited it out. By the end I was in severe pain literally every 15 minutes (hehe...I timed it...I had nothing else to do ) for 3 days straight before I finally had to have someone take me to the emergency room. It was stupid of me to wait that long. They had to give me morphine because the pain was so bad. As soon as it kicked and I finally got some relief I realized how dumb I'd just been (especially since they suspected the problem might actually have been something that required emergency surgery!). Obviously I don't know where you are in terms of your health and you're the only one who can judge how much you can take but, in my experience if you're feeling really bad and the starter diet isn't working then you should get extra help. It doesn't mean you failed at the diet, it just means that at the moment your system need a little more help than you're able to give it. For the record I had to be put back on high doses of steroids again for a few months but my doc worked with me to ween off them very quickly. I had a follow up flare on Thanksgiving (after making all that lovely food!) and that time (because, once again, I'm completely stubborn and afraid of prednisone) I juice fasted (using a lot of cabbage juice) and my symptoms got better almost immediately. Some people advice against doing that but it helped me better than the starter diet ever did and it was still all SCD legal (I was juicing and diluting all my own fruits and veggies). After my symptoms got better I went starter diet and worked up from there. Several other SCDers have done the same and it's helped them. I'm not advising you one way or the other though, just telling you my experience. This works for some and not for others. Whatever you decide, I really hope that you feel better soon. Prednisone sucks for side effects but it does work. And you're always welcome to come to this board and vent about the side effects Stacey > > > > > > So, please tell me why the prednisone sucks.
