Well timed query Adrienne...Australia has just brought it's own H1N1 vacine online & is now available free of charge to those of us in 'High Risk' categories. I'm concerned that it was developed & tested in a small population with great haste. I can't see how Long Term efficacy can be commented on at this stage!

I was at the Australian Lung Foundation Conference held recently in Brisbane & I asked a specialist Immunologist what he thought of this particular vaccine production process. His reply was of course couched in general terms but he said he hadn't seen any Reputable Study Results published as yet. I left thinking that it would be wise to hold off on getting it until a large enolugh population had been 'done; to show a bigger sample of side-effects etc.

Of course Australia is coming to the end of its 'Flu Season' while you lot are still in the early stages.

My sweet Cassie was brought to the vet for a Senior exam and blood work and the vet called today and asked me to bring her back as soon as possible to have her blood drawn for another CBC. The last test showed something abnormal in her red blood cells but can't remember what and she had very few platelets.. My vet said she has only seen this abnormal blood test in a screening blood test once before many, many years ago and she wants to make sure it isn't a lab mistake before she prescribes prednisone for her. Prednisone is so terrible for CAssie because she is so overweight now! She weighs 23 pounds and she is supposed to weight 12 pounds and the use of this drug will be so hard on her-and me! I will have to cook for her and make sure her diet is devoid of too much fat and find things she> can eat to squelch her prednisone appetite. But failure to treat will be her death. So, I am asking for prayers that the lab made a mistake. Thank you, Joyce Rudy AZ birds> >>

MB..wouldn't you have sufficient antibodies from having had a dose of the H1N1 flu without having to get a vaccine as well????

That was a question I asked as I had kind of assumed I would not need to get this particular vaccine. However, the CDC here in the US has recommended that even those who have had confirmed H1N1 have the vaccine anyway. This is based on the fact that there have been many cases of a mutated version of the H1N1 virus that have been resistant to the anti-viral meds. (Tamiflu and Relenza). This vaccine will give me protection against this mutated form.

Part of the problem with H1N1 that makes it particularly dangerous for us is it specifically sets up shop in the lungs and runs it's course from there.

I acknowledge that I did really well when I had it. I was on Tamiflu within 24 hours of my first symptoms and recovered easily. Would I do so well again? Maybe but I don't really want to take the chance if there's anything I can do to reduce my risk.

I do understand feeling cautious about "new" vaccines. Everyone must do what they are comfortable with. If I was a healthy 50 year old without lung disease, I might not get either vaccine. But I'm not. I have a serious debilitating lung disease. I have about 40% of a normal woman's lung function. I don't want to gamble with what I have left.

I'm going to get the flu shot. Right now I have a head cold. The kind with the sore throat, runny nose, headache, sneezing. Now when I sneeze it's not the house clearing type of sneeze I use to have in the past, the same with a cough. It's truly a weak effort. So, I wonder what is going to happen if I get a chest cold or pneumonia. How in the world am I going to clear out the mucus with such a weak cough effort. I believe prevention is the key. So, I'll try to avoid sick people, wash my hands, and get my flu shot. I think I'll get some alcohol sanitizer for my hands. Now that I have a cold I'm constantly washing my hands. My daughter moved back home after graduating college. She is a special education teacher for third thru fifth graders. She's already been sick once and now I have a cold. I hope we build up some sort of immunity.Oh, and if I haven't already told you, my husband and I are going to be grandparents again. My son and daughter-in-law are going to have a BOY! February 13th. It's their first. We are so excited since he will be our first grandson. Life is good!PJ in OH, 54, IPF'09, Sjogren's'95 Re: Question?? on H1N1

Yes it is a tough one MB...there's no information about which country has devloped what specific H1N1 vaccine...there are now documented Mutated Forms of the Virus..has the Oz/USA Vaccine been developed for both the original & the Mutated versions ..will it end up like a runaway train with the vaccines never quite keeping up with the new mutated versions.

I'm due for my regular Flu shots next March & I'm just wondering whether I'd be smarter to wait until then in the hope that more is known & perhaps new vaccines are developed to cope with the new mutated versions. At least I do know that no 'live' virus is in the current Oz Vaccine...that is good for those who are immune compromised. However it is worth asking about what happens if one's Immune system is in 'Overdrive' mode...does our body take on a particularly 'active' reaction to vaccines???? ????

The current H1N1 strain + it's mutated versions are still running here but not at an Epidemic level anymore. I guess that could mean that people drop their guard as well. There was lots of publicly encouraged Hand Washing going on in Shopping Malls etc while the Epidemic was raging.

There was some discussion about it on our National News last night & some Doctors are urging caution here. They are particularly worried about the vaccine being given to Pregnant women. It is that group that have been most impacted when the disease ran rampant here. Howver no one really knows if the Foetus' are safe when their Mothers are vaccinated. Children under 10 nare not being vaccinated even though they too have been a group badly impacted by the first run of the Virus.

Remember Thalilomide. ..it was considered 'safe' & given to Preganant women across the World.....No Govt would've sanctioned it's use if the disasterous effects were known at the time. Now Thalilomide is being researched again for it's effectiveness in a who;le range of didease processes but it conjures up such dreadful images that ever getting it's use off the ground again will be a difficult decision for governments to make.

That debacle certainly brought the whole process of Drug Testing under an unhappy spotlight.

OMG GIO with her THINKING cap on....

Cheers,

Right now you need urgently to get to the doctor. Cold? Flu? Infection?

All so close and all can lead to pneumonia and in all cases the most

important thing is to get treatment quickly. When your daughter is sick,

you need to avoid her in every way possible.
