Guest guest
1. I think this has been addressed before and I apologize for the need to repeat...I know Agave is illegal, so I'm assuming Agave Nectar is illegal too. But I just ordered online Elana's " The Gluten-free, Almond Cookbook " and learned that she prefers the agave nectar in her recipes - I'm very bummed out about that. Has anyone altered her recipes with honey? It's odd too because it is much lower on the gylcemic index than honey. 2. Coconut Oil - I checked out Tropical Traditions, but which type is best?? Comment: There's been lots of discussion about LDN and other meds, but no one ever really mentions the probiotic VSL-3 (yes, it's an SCD illegal, but so are so many of the meds for UC). It's specifically made for UC, IBS & Ileal pouch patients. It's kept me off meds...I am healing 100% med-free and only eating SCD, but still in the healing process. BTW, thank you to the person that shared www.localharvest.org - excellent website resource!! And through that I found www.beepurehoney.com, another great resource. Thanks in advance for any answers! - UC 9/09 SCD 11/

I will repost, in a separate message, why. 2. Coconut Oil - I checked out Tropical Traditions, but which type is best?? It all depends on what you're using it for. For things which you want to have a faint coconut-y taste, get the extra virgin. For things for which you want to have the goodness of coconut oil, but not the flavor, use the expeller pressed. I use half regular oil and half expeller pressed coconut oil (melted) in my mayonnaise -- it makes it set up thicker, and gives me another source of good saturated fats. According to http://www.vsl3.com/VSL3/healthcare.asp VSL#3® is a high-potency medical food probiotic consisting of live freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria. Each dose contains 450 billion live lactic acid bacteria per packet in defined ratios of lyophilized Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus. VSL#3® comes in a powder that is intended to be mixed with at least 4 ounces of cold water and consumed. VSL#3® has a light lemon cream flavor. Ingredients -- 450 billion lactic acid bacteria, maltose, natural lemon flavor, silicon dioxide. VSL#3® is also available as an unflavored powder that is intended to be mixed with yogurt, ice-cream, apple sauce or any other cold food and consumed. Ingredients -- 450 billion lactic acid bacteria, cornstarch. According to this, it contains not one, but three forms of Bifido (Bifidus) bacteria -- and Bifidus is SCD-illegal. There have been many, many instances of SCDers being thrown into a flare when taking this because it's supposed to be such a great probiotic. I, myself had a really bad experience with Bifidus.... NOT one I care to repeat, thanks! In addition, the flavored kind has illegal maltose and " natural lemon flavor " (which might be just lemon oil, but I doubt it). The unflavored kind has CORNSTARCH! So even if the bacteria were all legal, the other ingredients make it completely illegal as a supplement. We have a choice about supplements. We may not have a choice about prescribed pharmaceuticals. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
