Guest guest
I would try to have a few more " mandatory " breaks with the bottle or ice cream or shakes or what ever you can get into him. I have the same thing in the summer with my 6 year old, so when we are outside, there are snacks and drinks literallly all over the lawn and i notice he will just grab something, or that if i say stop for even a quick swallor, this helps. like a mock " pick nick " wiht mommy. we also eat outside all summer, from breakfast to dinner, so this becomes the new eating place and not just the play place. When he is physical active, which is a lot, he starts to spill. Sometimes, I know that he has not had enough carbs or it has been too long since he last ate, but it just seems like he spills them so easily when he is active. At night he has a bottle before bed with cornstarch and in the morning he is fine, even if he does not have a night time bottle, but during the day it is a different story. We even put a little corn starch in a day time bottle to hold him over, but it does not always work. Once we get the food in, the ketones start to go away. I know I am rambling on, but we were just wondering if anyone had any ideas. I don't want to stop him from being active. We check ketones regularly, but Dr.H. has never talked to us about blood sugar levels. Thanks, , Jonah's mom.

Guest guest
Hi , The Ketones are a musical group from the 50's. Sorry, I couldn't resist that one. Besides being on a low salt diet, I should also go on a low joke diet. Seriously, it is a chemical found in urine. Others on the list can explain why it is there and the consequences of its presence. Guest guest
- this is to the tee. And if I remember Jonah, he is also way too thin. I have been told that what happens is that the very think children use up their glycogen storage with activity (and heat, especially activity done in the heat). Carbohydrates are what provide glycogen storage. So it is balancing act. When was younger and seemed to spill ketones more often (blood sugar would begin to drop, we can tell because she would get these rapid dark circles under her eyes, and she would get lethargic; now that she is older, she usually senses it ahead of time) -- when she was younger, we literally gave her small amounts of carbohydrates every hour. The problem is that carbos also boost the blood sugar up; which then when it drops, you get the problems there too. SOOO.... around age 7, we moved to more of a mixture of carbos and protein (with some dairy mixed in). So one snack might be a complex carbo, the next would be a protein (beef jerky, nuts, peanut butter). But Jonah may need to snack every hour like . OUr GI told us that it doesn't take a lot of food; the frequency is more important. So tons of food every 4 hours is not as good as small amounts every hour. Especially if he has delayed gastric emptying ( does), smaller amounts work better. Also, remember that if he has delayed gastric emptying AND is prone to ketones/hypoglycemia, you need to keep glucogel (pharmacy) or a tube of iced frosting (baked goods section) with you at all times. You squeeze at least 1/2 a tube into his cheek which will absorb the sugar directly into the bloodstream. If you give him juice or food, there is the chance it will sit in his stomach and not get absorbed as quickly. Hope this helps. Good luck! Jenn > I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Guest guest
Hi , Having never been pregnant, nor am I likely to be pregnant barring some major medical breakthrough, I can't answer. I do know my wife urinated on alot of sticks to check various things. I think one of them was for ketones. I think you can get sticks at any pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist. I hope this helps Ken M I was wondering if > anyone had any suggestions. Lately, Jonah has been spilling ketones > even though he is eating pretty well.
