Guest guest
Janelle, My 5 yr old son is the only one on the gfcf diet in our house. We are real careful about putting foods that are not gfcf higher in the pantry where he can't reach them. He has occasionally asked for a particular item, but was happy with his gfcf food. We haven't bought a 2nd toaster as my hubby thinks its a bit much. So far no problems with cross contamination though. good luck
Guest guest
With a family of 6, it just didn't make sense to have everyone on the diet. My first suggestion is to buy a toaster oven, not another toaster. I use mine for toast as well as cooking other things like his pizza or warming up nuggets. It is a great size for cooking for one and will leave your regular oven available for what you are making for the rest of the family. My son loves it because in his mind it is " his " toaster. If you want to use it for non-GFCF food too, you can usually buy an additional rack from the company and change it back and forth for GFCF of non-GFCF bread. I think the biggest problem I have encountered is that my older kids (ages 8 & 10) seem to drop alot of bread crumbs on the dining table. I had to teach them to be very careful and clean up after themselves. I try to match as much as possible what we are eating and my GFCF son is eating but sometimes it is completely different. I think it is good for him to get used to the idea that he doesn't always get the same food as everyone else. Hopefully this will help him adapt to social situations. I have also made meals where I hold back the ingredients my son can't have, dish out his, then add the last ingredients in. I made tamale pie for my family a couple weeks back but my son is also allergic to corn. I mixed the ground turkey, tomato sauce, seasonings etc. then separated out some for my son. I proceeded to add the corn then the cornbread topping. My family had tamale pie while my son had the filling on top of rice. He loved it so much I made a special batch later on and froze in serving sizes for a last minute meal. I have also had to buy separate peanut butter and jelly for GFCF and non-GFCF use. I made stickers with " GFCF " on them and put it on anything that will be used for my son. My older kids have been trained that they can only use it if they put a clean knife in (no double-dipping). So far I have not had any problems. > I am flirting with the idea of having the rest of the family go back > to g and c foods like toast and milk. I know I would buy two > toasters. What about the dishwasher mixing those g and c items? Yikes, > scares me, but I know many of you do it-any neg. experiences?? > Janelle
