Guest guest
Hey, here's the response I got from the person on the ossg hungry list (the one who stated she gained weight 2 years post op after DS). ...Is it me, or is her answer STILL unclear? ********************************************************************************\ ****************************** valadybnkr@... wrote: In a message dated 10/19/01 11:10:13 PM Eastern Daylight Time, bethferro@... writes: I'm interested in this subject, but I have a question... > In a previous message of yours (#3140), you state in the content that > you had a " distal bypass with BPD " , but you stated in the signature > line that you had a " distal RNY on 3/2/98 " . > In your Oct. 11th message (#7994), you stated that you had the DS and > have regained 14 lbs. > The BPD/DS (biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch) AND the RNY > are 2 totally different surgeries, as you know, but it's not clear as > to which one you had. > Please clarify which one you had. THANK YOU, Beth (open DS 9/18/01 > Dr. Macura > That was my error. I actually contacted my doctor to confirm what I had done because I had become confused! I had the distal bypass with BPD on 03/02/98, NOT the D/S. My doctor bypasses about 10 ft of intestine...it is pretty extreme. He has since revised his surgical procedure and now does the D/S...but wasn't at that time. I have pretty much concluded that my weight regain is partially " par for the course " as a 3+ year RNY post-op, but part of it might be due to a stretched stoma. I can't afford a revision (and not sure I want to go through it either)...so I am going to focus on my eating habits and increase my exercise and hold myself accountable for what the scale says since I can't completely count on the surgery to do it for me anymore. I had originally regained about 14 lbs (since the beginning of the year) but recently put on another 10 lbs because I stopped going to the gym and reverted back to poor eating habits. I have decided to roll up my sleeves and stop this insanity before I wake up and find myself 100 lbs overweight again! Sorry I confused you! .. My doctor bypasses about 10 ft of > intestine...it is pretty extreme. Let's try to give some perspective to what she's saying with regard to her bypassed intestine. Here are my intestinal measurements as they were on the day of my surgery: 675cm (22.1 feet) is my total intestinal length 250cm (8.2 feet) is my alimentary limb (including 100cm common channel) 325cm (10.7 feet) is my biliary limb The biliary limb is what would be considered the " bypassed " intestine. So, my Rabkin Lap DS left me with 10.7 feet bypassed. But that number is only meaningful when taken in context of the total intestinal length. My 325cm bypassed out of 675cm total equates to 60% of my total intestinal length. This writer says she has a " pretty extreme " distal bypass of 10 feet bypassed. We can't really know how extreme that is without knowing her total intestinal length. Here are some scenarios to illustrate my point: - If she has a total intestinal length of 950cm (longest Rabkin has seen), her bypassed portion would equate to 32% of her total intestinal length, which isn't exactly " extreme " . - If she has a total intestinal length of 450 cm (shortest Rabkin has seen), her bypassed portion would equate to 68% of her total intestinal length, which would undoubtedly be considered extreme. My point is that when we see folks talking in terms of how much is bypassed, it's really doesn't tell us much, and it's hard to get a read on how much regain might be related to those lengths. Guest guest
I think it must be an RNY because she refers to a stretched stoma. The DS is a stoma-free surgery, preserving the pyloric valve. t open DS 12/11/00 Dr Baltasar, Spain 273/153 In a message dated 10/19/01 11:10:13 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > bethferro@y... writes: > > > I'm interested in this subject, but I have a question... > > In a previous message of yours (#3140), you state in the content that > > you had a " distal bypass with BPD " , but you stated in the signature > > line that you had a " distal RNY on 3/2/98 " . > > In your Oct. 11th message (#7994), you stated that you had the DS and > > have regained 14 lbs. > > The BPD/DS (biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch) AND the RNY > > are 2 totally different surgeries, as you know, but it's not clear as > > to which one you had. > > Please clarify which one you had.
