Penny,

The biggest reason I had surgery was for my kids. My kids are young (2 & 3),

and I wanted to be the kind of mother that could run and play with my kids.

I also wanted to make sure my health was such that I could participate fully

in their lives. The recovery from surgery is hard, but it really is a short

time compared to the lifetime of good health. I am down 53 lbs. and I

already feel a major difference in my life.

Congrats on the approval!

Penny, I have just got to reply to your post because it hit so close to home.

Even though I have had numerous surgeries in the past due to medical

necessities, I was very torn about whether or not to have the DS. I kept

wavering back and forth. When I got my surgery date, I still could not be sure

I was going to have the surgery. Before all my other surgeries, I had felt no

need to have my affairs in order and felt absolutely no stress at the idea of

being put to sleep and " opened up " . But I felt very uneasy about the DS and

before surgery I even went so far as to have a will drawn up and finalized. It

wasn't until I was prepped for surgery and waiting to go to the OR that I

figured out why I felt the way I did. It was because somehow I felt I

" shouldn't " be having the surgery. Not because it was risky but because if I

was a better person, more in control, or whatever then I wouldn't NEED the

surgery. I felt like my other surgeries were needed because of medical reasons

but I was having the DS because I couldn't control what I ate. It all went

back to my self esteem. I'm not saying that this could be the same for anyone

else and I'm sure there are lots of people who will argue the point but you

can't live your whole life as a MO person without beginning to feel like a

second class citizen who doesn't deserve to live like the " normal ones " . I am

only 2 weeks post op and feel like I've been run over by a truck but I'm so glad

I went through with the surgery.

This is my first time posting.I have been reading the post daily

and guess what I RECEIVED MY APPROVAL 10/04/01. I have mixed feelings

about wls. I am scared, yet I know wls would give me a better life.

My insurance co states they will hold my approval for six months. I

was approved for the biliopancreatic diversion with bypass.

Any support you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I have

two special little girls and would love to be able to run and play

with them like I want to.

Thanks,

Penny
