Guest guest
I have been receiving repeated viruses. Not sure if it is coming from someone in this group, but thought I would warn people NOT to open anything with " Snowhite and the 7 dwarves " . Just delete it.... as it is a virus. And... if you don't have a virus protection program, now is the time to purchase one! ...... Elle
Guest guest
Someone gave me a great suggestion once. If you go into your address book, and put any number or letter or even a " + " sign before each address, if the virus attacks you and tries to send something out to everyone in your address book, it will get nowhere. You just have to remember to delete that first digit before you send email. Of course, since I got my new computer, I haven't done it on this one, but now may be a good time, with all this crap running around. in NJ
Guest guest
That is a lot of trouble, and doesn't save you from other effects of viruses. Anyone who owns a computer and goes online owes it to themselves and those they are in contact with to get a good virus protection program and keep it up to date! They are not that expensive, and your friends will thank you even if they don't know you have it! --- 365/199/160 Lap RnY, Distal - Dr. s Vanderbilt University Hospital Surgery date June 3, 2002 Re: Viruses > Someone gave me a great suggestion once. The best thing you can do is have an antivirus running and updated daily right now. Do not open attachments from anyone you don't know to be running an antivirus. With this particular virus, there are .pif files or .src. files. This does get into address books but changes the name of the sender so it it untrackable. I have recieved at least 60 in the last 2 days. I have even recieved notices from people saying I have sent them the virus or my mail cannot be sent because there is a virus attached. This is not because I have sent anything...it is because my name was taken by this program. Each of these notifications have also carried an attachment. When the attachment has been removed the mail can be read. With Outlook Express, you can use a method to read the mail from those you know without actually opening the mail. Its best though to just be protected. You may find some of the update sites not responding because of the large load at the present time. Keep trying! It's worth the effort. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.htm l
Guest guest
Oh, I agree with that, but for those who feel so inclined (and don't have a huge address book), it would prevent the viruses from going out to your email list if you should get hit. Just a thought, in NJ ************************ > That is a lot of trouble, and doesn't save you from other effects of > viruses. Guest guest
I am also Norton'd constantly. I get a LOT of spam. Although I am not net savvy & do not roam sites, I suspect I am in a LOT of address books out there,. I am getting about 300 spam per day now ( & no, I never respond to them to unsub since I know that just gets me more spam), and about half are now these attachments. Norton tells me they're there, but *I* still have to delete them. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
If anyone has Outlook or Outlook Express, you can create a rule for these nasty viruses.....I made one and told it that if certain words were in the subject line (in this case...wicked screensaver, your approval, thanks!) and about 10 others... to delete it from the server. This way it never even gets into my mailbox. Yesterday my Norton's caught and quarantined 117 of those buggers. Then I had to delete em all. This is way easier! What I'm pretty much getting now is just notices from other mail servers that I have supposed sent out a virus and they bounced it. I know I didn't, they know I didn't...it's just that darn bug! It didn't. No, I'm not saying you didn't get the emails, but no attachment with a virus was sent from your address. Probably the most common virus out there right now works by sending mail using a conterfeit " From " address. In other words, someone who has your address in her address book has the virus. The virus sent itself to everyone else in her address book using YOUR address as the " From " address. Then, when the mail is rejected by the recipients, YOU - unfortunately - get the rejection notice, causing you to wonder how you got a virus. You do not have a virus; Norton is keeping you free of them. However, with the proliferation of new viruses coming out every day, it is important to update your Norton daily, rather than just the once a week that it does automatically. Thank goodness for Norton (and the other anti-virus programs)! --- 365/199/160 Lap RnY, Distal - Dr. s Vanderbilt University Hospital Surgery date June 3, 2002
Guest guest
: What this virus is doing is harvesting e-mail addresses from those whose computers are infected. The worm goes in, grabs the e-mail addresses on someone's computer, and starts sending junk *to* those addresses, as well as spoofing those addresses to send the virus to others. Thus, even if you never had the virus on your computer, you're involved due only to the fact that your e-mail address is on a computer (someone else's) that is infected. If the virus with your spoofed address is sent to an invalid e-mail address, it will be bounced back to you as if you'd sent it. This is why we all need to have up-to-date anti-virus software: we protect not only ourselves, but others, too. pandy =) > Today I came home and had 6 messages at the Postini site that contained > attachments with viruses. > I received two emails sent automatically on my outlook express telling me > that an attatchment with a virus had been sent from my address. > > If the email never got downloaded to my computer ...how did that happen? > Can someone who knows more about computers explain this to me. Guest guest
Thank you Pandy. Well part of the problem is that people think the virus is coming from me and it is not. My computer is NOT infected. The virus itself has taken my email address as a sender. People think I am the one sending the virus to them. People are thinking that I am not up-to-date on my anti-virus. I am. RE: Viruses > : > > What this virus is doing is harvesting e-mail addresses from those whose > computers are infected. Guest guest
Yes, I tried blocking senders until I blocked a coupla of highly important people to me! LOL! Then I figured I was a lil too fast on the trigger finger & stopped doing THAT. I just plan to delete a coupla hundred before I even get to the real stuff,. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc.
