It was 175 before surgery --which was up from 145 a few years ago--. My family--siblings, parents-- tends to have good cholesterol numbers and it is not because everyone eats a diet that would produce this. My latest bloodwork though showed my cholesterol to be 98! I asked Dr. Hess if this was anything to worry about and he said no. So the surgery definitely lowers cholesterol a great deal. It had brought my cholesterol down from 288 to 188. Post-op, I continued to take it, and my cholesterol dropped to 120. Then, I cut it out, and three months later, my total cholesterol rose to only 133. July 23rd: Total Cholesterol = 114 (reflects being on 20 mg/day Lipitor) HDL = 30 (low) LDL = 58 Triglycerides = 128 October 15th: Total Cholesterol = 133 (no Lipitor since July; eating lots of animal fats) HDL = 33 (low) LDL = 81 Triglycerides = 97 My experience is quite common for WLS involving intestinal bypass. So, there is a very good chance that you will be able to drop the Lipitor. Also, it may be advisable to drop it immediately after surgery, because it works in the liver, and your liver will already be overtaxed dumping fat from your body. I suggest that you discuss this with your PCP and surgeon before your procedure. Best, Steve --

Dawn-->>>>>>>>>>> Thats whats so great about this, Dawn, as well as arresting diabetes! Can you imagine not having to worry about those two diseases? This makes it possible, I would think, to reach the age of 100 easily and have an abundance of health to boot! Hugs, Judie -----
Guest guest
Once again I find myself spending valuable time reading the extremely interesting information, and following the links posted, regarding the inadequacy of the western diet and its supposed association with coronary heart disease and possible death. Then I remind myself that this is a support group for parents of children with Silver Syndrome; where most people make posts about their children's various conditions, successes and failiures, the good days and the bad days (and nights...oh the nights). It's where we share the stuff of our everyday lives, and once in a while discuss the more heady or techinical subjects where there could be some innovation that may benefit our children. It's not a place that I look for the type of scientific debate being suggested. This is not a scientific forum discussing the merits of various research papers. Most of those suggested have nothing to do with Children, let alone Silver Syndrome. We think this is not the correct place to debate this subject. Lots of members of this group have much more important everyday issues with their children, and if anybody has any practical advice for them then I am sure that it would be welcome. Once again, this is a support group, not a scientific debate. Damian and Jody

Guest guest
Prednisone raises cholesterol. Saturated fat raises both LDL and HDL. Carbs raise VLDL. VLDL equals triglycerides divided by 5. And total cholesterol equals HDL plus LDL plus VLDL. So you can see the effect foods and medicine can have. Ron Holly, Oh, no. I'm sorry pantethine did not help your ldl. I'm in the same boat as you. My hdl is 81 and my ldl is 171 (highest it has ever been) and trig 177 for a total of 280. A couple of months ago it was 248. I think the difference is ldl and the way I have been eating. That is why I have come to this site. Must be the way I was eating. I was going thru a severe diarrhea at the time. Ate a lot of bland foods ... potatoes, biscuits, white gravy and beef. I didn't care about weight at the time, but I wanted comfort food. I ate a lot of beef because I wanted the iron because I was so weak. Anybody else relate to any of this? Holly, my thyroid is all off and the doc said it was because of my prednisone. To not worry about it. Don't know if that applies to you or not. I'm like you ... I was so hoping the pantethine would help .... damn! Guest guest
They now say saturated fat does not raise your LDL. The following article tells about a study that actually showed that it lowered LDL. http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/21/good-news-on-saturated-fat/ Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > > Prednisone raises cholesterol. Guest guest
Your triglycerides are probably high due to things like the biscuits, potatoes, etc. Pre-SCD, my triglycerides were 165. When I had them checked 9 months into the diet, they had dropped to the high 80's. I figure it was the high carb diet that made them so high pre-SCD. However, my LDL and HDL have been pretty consistent, both before and after SCD. I haven't been on prednisone for a long time, so that's not the cause of my thyroid problem. However, I wonder if my thyroid being off could have somehow prevented the pantethine from working? I took my last pantethine pill tonight, and am on the fence about ordering more. But you know what? I'm not going to worry about my LDL anymore. From all that I've read, only the HDL and triglycerides really matter. Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > Holly, > > Oh, no.
