Guest guest
I know this is a SCD sight so if anyone has any suggestions please reply just to me. I have had heartburn/burning, gnawing in stomach since August '09. This goes on 24/7. I have gone through two doctors and a sack full of meds and no help. I have also tried natural/alternative methods. I am so tired of this. The SCD diet is doing very well - that is the bright spot in my life! Thanks. Guest guest
Sandy,My son gets acid reflux and also gets the gnawing burning in his chest. Several years ago I read on Dr. Leo Galland's site that fresh carrot juice is good for that. Well, I tried it, and VOILA! instant success! My son had tried all the meds and other alternative methods as well, with no success. We have a juicer, so it was easy to get started for us. I just ran to the store and got the carrots. I think the easiest thing to do when you are starting out and feeling miserable is to buy the big bag of already peeled organic baby carrots at Costco. You can strain the juice too if you think that is best for your current digestive symptoms. I make the juice each time he needs it, I don't save any in the fridge as it oxidizes very quickly. My son will go for long periods without having problems and so sometimes we forget what to do when he gets it. Just this week he's had some trouble and each time I made him a full glass of juice (8-12 oz), which he drank immediately, and each time, instant success. I have no idea why it works, but it does. It's a lifesaver for him. I hope this helps you!Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TDate: Fri, 07 May 2010 21:54:02 -0000To: <BTVC-SCD >Subject: heartburn I know this is a SCD sight so if anyone has any suggestions please reply just to me. Guest guest
Sandy,What were the sack full of meds that you have tried? Usually a doctor won't check acid levels and will just prescribe an antacid, but in fact low acid can cause the same symptoms as high acid levels. Another thought is that it could be that the base of your esophagus is coming into contact with stomach acid (kind of a slightly slack valve can allow the stomach acid where it shouldn't go). This can happen for several reasons, but I think it can sometimes be related to hormone imbalances that allow the certain muscles and ligaments to become loose/slack. I know I have read which hormones, but I can't remember right now, but it could have something to do with thyroid and/or adrenal function. I know that both of those can affect stomach acid levels as well. If too low of an acid level and/or body temp is present, then you can get a fungal/bacteria overgrowth in the stomach. If the temperature and acid level issue isn't addressed, the infections can be reoccurring so even if your doctor has treated you for possible parasites/infections already, then it could have returned. A quick home check is to take your temperature at 3, 6, and 9 hours after waking each day (obviously not after exercising) and average the temps. Do this for 5 days. Your daily average should be 98.6 with no or very minimal variations between days (like .2 or less difference in the daily average from day to day). If you find your temp does not conform to this, you might have a thyroid or adrenal function issue. The third thought is that the base of esophagus is inflammed for some other reason, but I can't think of why other than a possible food sensativity. If it is manageable, it might resolve itself on its own after time on SCD using SCD yogurt/probiotics.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, May 7, 2010 10:54:02 PMSubject: heartburn I know this is a SCD sight so if anyone has any suggestions please reply just to me. Guest guest
It can differ with each person. I know if eat too much acidic food in one sitting, I'll get heartburn. For example, several glasses of tea with lemon, or vinegar, etc.Tomatoes don't give me too much trouble. But then, it could be different for you. -- Supposedly tomatoes cause heartburn...I am trying to figure this out too.LPR Acid Reflux
