Guest guest
Liz,That is fantastic that your son has done so well over the past 6-9 months! You and your son must feel really good. My husband had problems with bleeding as well for a very long time. He too got very tired of it. Because it was very bright red blood, he knew that it was low in the colon near the rectum. He decided to try Asacol suppositories again (hadn't used them in years because they had become ineffective). The very next day it was resolved and hasn't been back -- that was about 18 months into the diet. Sometimes the bleeding is the last to go. Don't know why, but there it is. Because he is still bleeding occasionally, that means that although his gut flora is pretty sorted and looking good, there are still some ulcerated spots that need more time to heal. I would really suggest that you wait a bit longer before trying illegals so that those ulcerations can heal. If it were me, I would try the suppositories, stay with SCD, then when the bleeding had stopped for a good period (take the longest time he has gone between episodes of bleeding as a guide), drop the Asacol suppositories, wait a bit longer to see if the blood returns (again using the guide above) and test then. Elaine recommended waiting 1 full year after the last flare (which can mean D, C, and/or bleeding, and possibly other flare-like reactions like skin rashes if one has had them in the past) before trying illegals. And to be honest, your son is at that 9-12 month flare mark and the bleeding could be part of it. One more comment regarding the illegals is this, some people know instantly that they have had something illegal, others have to wait weeks for the effects because it is a gut flora shift that is longer in coming. When that happens, many people have reported that it is much more difficult to get stablized through diet again because the bad bacteria (although not showing promenantly through testing now) could overgrow easily and be stronger because they withstood the first attempt to kill them off. Also, bacteria and fungi will go dormant and only raise their heads to check the environment later to see if it is hospitable -- I don't think the dormant forms would show on testing. Elaine hypthesized that it was these dormant ones that were behind the 2-3 month, 6-9 month, and 9-12 month flares.I wish you all the best success in helping your son.Amelia To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, May 7, 2010 11:54:20 PMSubject: Stopping the diet, trying something new My 15 year old son has been on SCD for UC since August of 2009. He improved quite a bit at first, stopped losing weight, gained back to a normal weight for his height (about 170 for 6 feet) and has maintained that weight. He has had episodes of bleeding off and on for the whole time. I would really like to see his bleeding stop completely. We went to our naturopath for a follow-up to a stool test he had done in January to test for parasites and bacteria. He has good levels of Lactobaccilus and a couple of other beneficial bacteria, absolutely no yeast or "bad" bacteria. So I'm wondering what good SCD will do for him if the point is to starve out the bad bugs, when he doesn't even have any. The doctor and I decided to try him on something new - a couple of inexpensive supplements and hopefully LDN, as soon as she finishes researching it. We decided to take a break from SCD and see how he does. I've been doing the diet with him and I'm excited to try some new foods! We started out with a little rice last night and so far, no problems. I'm not adding anything else until he's had it for a few days and we know he doesn't have a bad reaction. I figure that he can come back to SCD if the supplements and LDN don't work. The supplements aren't legal anyway, so he wouldn't really be on SCD while trying them. Thank you for the help that I've gotten here for the past several months! I might be back if this doesn't work out. Liz
