Guest guest
> Do you think six hours is excessively long? My DS was performed completely lap, and I was under anesthesia for 6.5 hours. I did ok except for a postop asthma attack in recovery. Hope that helps- Liane
Guest guest
I believe that it depends on the doctor. Some will only perform open and not lap. plus, i also think it depends on the patient and their medical history, etc. in Delaware Lap RNY 3/10/04 261/179/
Guest guest
It depends on the doc and sometimes it can depend on the person. It depends on how round you are where they put the instruments with some docs. If you are too large the tools they use might not be long enough. But some it is personal preference. Dora in Tennessee Lap/Open RNY (date?) Vanderbilt Hospital 451/445.6/150 Lap VS Open I have been seeing where some are having Open and some are having Lap......how do they determine which surgery to do on each patient ? or does it depend on the doc ? Guest guest
If you have it Lap the healing time is quicker and its's alot easier to move around I tinks slightly less pain as well put your more open to infections if you do open. Open is not bad thought I've known people who had open that were just fine. It sometimes depends on you insurance but yes most of the time it depends on your doc and what there practice prefers. Guest guest
if you have had a previous surgery they might not be able to do the lap due to scare tissue and if you are to big around the middle they might not be able to because the tools are only so long and another reason they can't is a large liver....... i had to go though a 12 week class and this was so that we would be informed on this type of stuff and it was very helpfully , i know some people had to go to classes for 6 months and some only a 1 day class, i have looked up both types of surgeries on the net and learned alot, i have my surgery Aug 18th and it will be lap...... it's getting here really fast lots of luck Shirley of Fontana so cal Velvetsky wrote: I have been seeing where some are having Open and some are having Lap......how do they determine which surgery to do on each patient ? or does it depend on the doc ? Guest guest
Lap is a longer procedure than open. Since I was self-pay, I saved quite a bit of money getting it done open. ($1000s) The only difference in recovery seems to be in the first 2 days. I have an incision from my breastbone to my navel, but I was still off my pain meds by monday, after surgery on wednesday. I was able to (carefully) get in and out of cars, and after 1 week I was able to slowly get out of bed without any discomfort other than the stretching and tugging. I do, however, have a higher than average pain threshold (high enough that doctors and nurses have commented upon it, wonderingly) but I don't think most people have pain for too much longer than I did.
