Guest guest
, I appreciate your questions. I've found that reading all the questions and answers on this list about the pre-op tests, the operation, the hospital stay and the post-op care has made me feel a lot calmer about the idea of major surgery. You asked about IVs and since I've had lots of them I thought I'd respond. Getting an IV shouldn't be a problem. Pain wise it's somewhere in the flu shot category. The two most important things I've learned about IVs is that if the person doing it seems to be having a problem or is causing you pain ask them to stop and get someone else to start the IV. Sometimes they are new, or rushed or just having a bad day and things will go much more smoothly with someone else. Some hospitals even have special teams who start IV's if the floor nurses have a problem. The second thing is to keep an eye on the area around the IV and if you notice swelling or puffiness tell the nurse immediately since it could mean that the IV isn't working correctly.
