Guest guest
Hi , 5.5 mm is very mild from what I understand. My son is 11 months and 7 mm off and I agonized over the helmet decision as well, because the orthotist said it was mild and that we could really feel comfortable with whatever we decide to do. I think someone gave good advice saying if you are fine with his head shape, then you don't need to band, but if it bothers you, then maybe you should. At 5.5 mm, I probably wouldn't (I just barely decided to try it with my DS), but this has to be a decision that you are comfortable with. good luck! mom to Olsen, 11 months old > > so the scan was done today and has 5.5mm asymmetry. So shall I have him go through 6 months of helmet at 17 months ( actually 14 mo adj because he was born at 26 weeks to his advantage for this purpose)for probably tiny or no improvement. The scan looks actually much better than what I see when I look at him. The big flat spot on the back is really not noticeable on the scan, I guess it's the perspective. Any word of advice would be welcome. again please: How bad of an asymmetry did Jake have when you started? How hard was it for him to wear the helmet at his age? > Thank you > >
Guest guest
Hi, I also understand that 5.5mm is very mild. Our specialist told us that this number is just one indicator. The scan before we started the helmet showed 7.1mm asymmetry. However, our son had a significant flat spot. The specialist told us that visually our case was moderate. With hand calipers, she measured 15.2mm. So, I think some cases could look worse at 5.5mm than others. If you do band, please let us know how it goes. We didn't start the helmet until 12 months, so we may be at about 5.5mm around 14 months. Our last scan at 12.5 months showed 6.2mm. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi - You really just have to go with what feels best for you. Jake ended treatment with about 5 mm of asymmetry (started with about 15mm), and I can still see it. For me personally, it depends on whether there's any forehead bossing to go along with the flat spot. I think if I was just dealing with the flat spot right now, I would be a lot happier with his head shape. It's the forehead bossing that bothers me the most. It's SO much better than where we started, but again, I can still see it. So I think what you have to do is just assume that his head will not correct anymore on its own and ask yourself if you'll be happy with that headshape a year from now, when it will definitely be too late to do anything. If not, then I would band him now. You really have nothing to lose. Please let us know what you decide! Jake-2.5 (DOCBand Grad 9/08) Jordan-5 > > so the scan was done today and has 5.5mm asymmetry.
