I can't help you specifically with your location--but I have some encouragement

about ears--

We don't live ANYWHERE near the " big band " places, and are using a locally

designed helmet.  My son got his helmet at 6 1/2 months, and he has very mild

plagiocephaly; the biggest issue we are concerned with are his face

shifting--ear alignment, jaw/cheekbone alignment, etc.  And that's an iffy point

apparantly with helmets, whether or not it fixes that sort of thing.

He's had his helmet for about 5 weeks, and we go for a checkup Monday--and I've

noticed that his too-far-forward ear is now pressing on the BACK of the ear

opening--as if it has shifted backwards a bit. His head has rounded out a bit

and his forehead too--I think we are going to be very pleased with the changes.

Our insurance is more than likely not going to pay a penny for this, but we bit

the bullet and got the helmet because we wanted to do what we could to fix

this--

Even if it's mostly an ear issue, I think if you can fix it, you should; better

to do it now than wait and see IMO--

Good luck--

Betsy

Plagiocephaly

Date: Thursday, June 25, 2009, 9:55 AM

I am new to this group and I am hoping for some advice. My son is almost 5

months old and was diagnosed with Plagiocephaly and Torticollis at his 4 month

well baby check up. He has been going to PT for the past month and he is getting

a lot better. The flat spot on his head is filling out and getting a lot

rounder, but our biggest concern for him is the misalignment of his ears. So I

live in Pasco county, Florida (Northwest of Tampa area) and I have been calling

the two places that make helmets. Hanger is about 20-25 minutes away (at the

most) and West Coast Brace and Limb is just over an hour away (where he would

get a StarBand) and I'm not sure which to choose. I think he is moderate and on

the milder end of that, so it's not too bad. I am just looking for advice about

which to go to based on your experiences -- we have not met in person with

either yet, but both have been very friendly on the phone. Thank you!

Welcome !

You should call and ask questions of both places... Like how many babies they treat a month/year? How long the ortho has been in practie treating plagio? Do they have any before/after pics to look at? and if it applies, Insurance questions.

Then, see if they do free evaluations... I know CT does but not sure about hanger or star. Then, if possible visit both places and see what they have to say about your babies head.

See who you are most comfy with. That should help in your decision!
