Guest guest
My pediatrician thinks that my 17 month old daughter with cf should have the synagis shot to prevent rsv. Her cf doc says that she doesn't need it and she didn't have it last year either. Should every young child with cf have it? Do only some get it because it is expensive and not everyone can afford it? I am wondering what to do. She has had such bad luck with sinus infections, many bouts of pneumonia, lots of colds and sleep apnea. She is always sick and I don't want to take any chances with her getting rsv. Guest guest
That is strange. My CF doc AND my pediatrician STRONGLY encouraged the RSV shot until my son was 2. Especially since you have an older child and you daughter wcf has had other lung issues. It can't hurt to give it but it can be pricey if you don't have insurance. mom to Ashton 2.5 yrs > My pediatrician thinks that my 17 month old daughter with cf should have the > synagis shot to prevent rsv. Guest guest
Hello Holly!! I think you should go ahead and give it to her. I have never read of any side effects, although some kids do have certain reactions to vaccines, but the alternative is worst. I gave a the pneumovax (sp) shot even though I was told that was not a concern in cf. Specially, if insurance is paying for it, do it. Guest guest
my son had synagis the first 2 winters, he was 6 weeks premature and I think on top of the flu shot ,it was a good added precaution had barely a cold both winters. cf dr said he didn't need it and was to old for it last visit he will be 2.5 next month. but to get flu shot mid oct for sure, so I would go for it if your insurance will pay for it. ours did thank god it is spendy! good luck amy mom to nathan 2.5 with cf rsv questions My pediatrician thinks that my 17 month old daughter with cf should have the synagis shot to prevent rsv. Guest guest
Holly, My daughter, Piper 14 months, was diagnosed in November of last year. As soon as she was diagnosed she received her first Synagis shot and got them through April of this year. Her CF doc told us that she should get them again this year as well as a flu shot. I stay home with Piper, she doesn't go to daycare or a babysitter, so she isn't around other children, but I still feel that the Synagis shot is a must, just in case. I would rather bear the expense of the shot than have her get RSV and end up in the hospital. I've seen the toll that RSV takes on kids that don't have CF, so I don't want to find out what it would do to one with CF. I hope that this helps. Guest guest
Hi Holly, I'm really surprised your CF doc said she doesn't need it! Ours strongly encouraged we get them each winter until our daughter is 2. We did it last year and we are waiting to hear if insurance will pay again this year. I would definitely go with your pediatrician's recommendation and get it. Guest guest
Hi Holly, Our daughter went through her first winter without synagis too. Her ped recommended it for the 2nd winter and CF clinic was in agreement. RSV can be especially dangerous to our little ones and we felt that didn't need to be admitted for RSV as well.(she had enough going on with CF) It might be worth it to just get it. Did CF clinic say NOT to do it or just that she didn't HAVE to have it? The decision is yours but we decided to go on the side of caution. Good luck! rsv questions My pediatrician thinks that my 17 month old daughter with cf should have the synagis shot to prevent rsv. Guest guest
Holly, I have been in your shoes! Our pediatrician thought Elyse should have the shot, and our CF doctor said she did not need it. The CF doctor based it on her overall health. Elyse has not had any serious illnesses, so the doctor felt it was not necessary. In the end, Elyse did not have the syangis shot. I think, as a mom, since your daughter has had sinus infections and pneumonia it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor again. I would ask why the doctor feels it is not necessary. Good luck! Guest guest
Abby is 22 months and has not been sick. Her CF doctor said that it was up to her parents. There are seven (I think) pulmonologists at this CF Care Center and they only recommend the shots to the children under two. Since Abby is close to two and healthy they didn't think that it was necessary. The shot does not prevent you from catching RSV. IT is supposed to reduce the severity of the RSV if you do get it. Good luck in your decision. What ever you decide will be right. Gale > My pediatrician thinks that my 17 month old daughter with cf should have the > synagis shot to prevent rsv. Guest guest
I guess that I should have also told you that last year, Abby sot the shots. That year she had been sick. Your insurance will play a big role in your decission. The shots are $3,000 each and there are 7 of them (total of $21,000). I am hoping that this does not effect the CF doctor's recommendation. Abby's doctor said that he is not sure what he would do about the shots, if it were his daughter. He left the decission up to her parents. Guest guest
I think that you may have that info wrong. The shots are expensive, but the drug company sends a vial of the Synagis to the docs office for each child that is getting the shot, that vial lasts through the RSV season. The vial is anywhere between $2500-$3000. Katy Mom to Austin 4 no CF & Piper 14 months w/CF danieleverettharris wrote: I guess that I should have also told you that last year, Abby sot the shots. Guest guest
Really? It was the infusion department that told us this price. When they told us that it was $21,000 for the 7 shots, Toni literally got sick. The infusion clinic called Toni's insurance company for her prior to giving Abby the first shot to see if they would cover it. I'll ask Toni what the hospital actually charged. Guest guest
We got a letter from our insurance company shortly after her first shot, that explained the cost, how it was administered, etc... Basically making sure that we understood that it came in a vial and that the cost of the vial was like $2500.00 and that they would only cover one vial a year. One vial is supposed to last through the RSV season which is October through April (I think). Of course they may do things differently where you live. Guest guest
JC got the shots his first two winters even though he had not been sick. It was actually our health insurance company (an HMO) that recommended and provided the shots. I think they figured that was cheap if it prevented a hospitalization. By the way, I think the shots are closer the $1000. each, at least that's what we were told last time he had them. Our CF doctors were kind of suprised the HMO recommended them, since JC was not sick, but they were all for him getting them.
