Diane,

I'm so sorry you've been and out of the hospital for so long. I know how

hard that can be. I had that happen to me a couple of times too, though

not lately. You'll be in my prayers that hopefully you won't be in so

much for a long time to come.

Well, Shirley, it looks like I have to cancel and reschedule my OD

appointment; this morning I got a phone call from my Mom - my 89 year-

old Dad died this morning.// He had been ill with Advanced Prostate

Cancer that had spread to his bones. He was diagnosed in January 2002,

had been treated with Combined Hormone Therapy (Lupron Depot shots

every 3 months and Casodex every day (anti-androgens))and had

successfully been treated with Radiation Therapy last summer for

Metastatic Cancer to his spine. But, he developed Metastatic bone

cancer earlier this year in his femur and acetabulum (ball-and-socket

joint in hip) and the Radiation Therapy wasn't helping, so it was

discontinued. He had been under Hospice care for the last few months

and I got to have a long 2-week visit with him last month. He worsened

a few days ago and my Mom was told he was dying. I will be flying out

of Boise to Florida on Tuesday; the funeral is Wednesday. My Dad was a

World War II veteran, so he will be having a military funeral and will

be buried at the Florida Military Cemetery, which is about one hour

from my parents' home. I'll fly back to Boise on the 24th.// So, I will

be rescheduling my OD appointment on Monday - hopefully I will be able

to get in on the 26th, as I fully intend on getting on with all this,

now more than ever. [if you're wondering how I knew the technical info

on my Dad's cancer: I'm in the medical profession and work in the

Pathology Dept at my hospital] Sorry that this is such a " downer " of a

post. Thank you, friends, for your support. ///// Diane

I am so, so sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like your dad

was in a lot of pain for a long time. That must have been very

difficult for him and for you and your mother. My grandfather on my

father's side was also a WW2 veteran and the funeral was also held in

Florida. Thankfully he left us quietly in his sleep and so did not

suffer at all, or so the doctors told us.

I will be keeping you in my thoughts on Wednesday.

And I'm sure that now that you're determined to get the surgery done

things will just fall into place.

Diane,

My sympathies on your loss. My thoughts and prayers will be with you

and your family in the coming weeks. I hope you are somewhat

comforted in the knowledge that you got to spend a couple of quality

weeks with your Dad just last month. I'm sure it meant the world to

him.

Sincerely,

Carol

Diane,

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Cancer is something I know

all too well, lost my mother to ovarian cancer and I have had breast

cancer (15 yrs ago). I would like to think your father is in a

better place now without any pain.

I also have a friend whose husband is undergoing both chemo and

hormone therapy for prostate cancer.

You're Dad (and mine, too) were World War II veterans. They did a

great service for our country.

I am a retired medical technologist, what do you do in the lab?

Just don't worry about the OD, it'll all be waiting when you return.

Thoughts and prayers, again.

Shirley, thank you for kind words. I think I'm feeling okay about my

Dad's passing, but I'm sure once I see my Mom, the reality that he's

gone will hit me. I've also heard that Military Honors at a funeral

or at graveside are very touching, especially the 21-gun salute, the

playing of Taps and handing the folded flag to the spouse. I will be

staying with my Mom for nearly a week after the funeral is over, as

she will need someone to help her cope. I was also thinking of asking

her to come and stay with me for the recuperation period after my

surgery next year. She could help me with the " blenderizing " and it

would make her feel needed. Thank you to all my new friends on this

site for your support at this trying time./ Diane

Hi Diane, Glad to hear all went well in Florida.

After I sent the message asking your lab speciality, I saw the cyto

in your online name and realized you probably were a

ctyotechnologist.

Let us know how it goes tomorrow at OD.

I got my clearance from the cardiologist last week, then we drove to

KS for twin granddaughters graduation. We got home last night.

We're back for 5 days - then get molds, etc. done again on May

31st. The splint or whatever it's called, that they use to line up

the jaws, that they made in November were a little wobbly, so they

felt they'd need to redo - sure hope I don't have to pay again. We

fly out that afternoon to Oregon for grandson's graduation.

We get back a week (on June 9th) before my surgery and last few

appointments. June 16th - H & P, and OD putting the surgical hooks

in. I just want to get it done and over with at this time.

Shirley
