IVF update--embryos transferred

Here I am lying on the couch for the rest of the day.

We had our embryo transfer at around 1:45 pm. There

was some drama of course this morning about the

embryos. The genetic testing company called to let us

know that ONLY 2 of the embryos were healthy--out of

8!! 1 embryo didn't test well so they didn't know

much about it, 2 had Klinefelter's syndrome (a

chromosomal abnormality that occures in 1 in 500 males

and causes enlarged breasts, sparse facial and body

hair, small testes, and an inability to produce

sperm), and 2 were missing chromosomes and wouldn't

" stick " long enough to stay pregnant. Only 2 of the 8

had CF which is 25%--right along the normal

statistics.

So if you are wondering why a pregnancy didn't " stick " , there may be

a chromosomal problem. I am only 31 and had great embryos but all

the rest of those that we didn't transfer probably would have

miscarried. If we hadn't paid extra for the chromosomal testing, we

would have put back embryos that wouldn't have worked. That extra

$2500 was well worth it.

So after we got the call that only 2 embryos were

healthy, I then had to call the fertility clinic to be

sure that those particular two healthy embryos were

still alive in the petri dish. I was so petrified

that we were going to have nothing left!! But, after

a tense half hour, the clinic called to say that ALL 8

embryos were still alive. Normally only 20-40% of

embryos make it to day 5. So despite the fact that

they had chromosomal and genetic problems, they were

still sticking around.

The 2 embryos that we transferred were great. One is

definitely a CF carrier and one may be. One was a boy

and one was a girl.

The transfer was virtually painless. My bladder had

to be very full for the ultrasound to work and I had a

speculum in and an abdominal ultrasound going at the

same time so I was ready to burst. We got to see the

2 embryos on a TV screen. So tiny and so very

adorable. We saw them go into my uterus and hopefully

that is where they (he/she) stay.

We get a pregnancy test on October 8 so we will let

you know once the results are in.

Thanks for all your good wishes!! Here's to getting

knocked up the NEW fashioned way!

How wonderful. What is the possibility that both embryos would survive and

you would have two babies?

Wow! I hope at least one of the embryos stick around. I really hope it works!

Can you imagine if they both " stuck " ?

,

I am happy for you. They wont tell you what sex the embryos are in

Australia or test them for other abnormalities only, in our case Cf.

Fingers and toes crossed for a great outcome.
