Guest guest
My 28 month old son has had a dry cough for 36 hours. It started with an alergy from ragweed or something. We had the runny nose and sneezing for a couple of days, but that was taken care of with Zyrtec. Now, it's a dry cought and he can't sleep at all. Totally missed his nap today. Doesn't seem to be lung related; we've not have lung problems yet. He keeps swallowing mucus and it makes him cough. Any ideas, fixes, suggestions? We have been giving him Robitussin cough (a cough suppressant), Tussin (Guafenisin, an expectorant thinner), Zyrtec (allergy medicine), and Advil to reduce swelling. HELP! He just cannot sleep! mom to Ashton 2.5 yr wcf

Guest guest
The guafenisin is good, but have you checked with the doc about the cough suppressant? Especially in combination with an antihistamine - both can dry and therefore, thicken, the mucous, making it harder to expel and making a better home for bacterial infections to set in. Every individual is different and benefits (sleep) have to be weighed against risks but generally cough suppressants are avoided or limited in use whenever possible in CF. If Ashton's CF doc has suggested or okayed it, ignore me :-) M
Guest guest
My daughter has a dry cough often and I was told by her doctor to only use Expectorants never use suppressants. I am sure everyone is different but I have always followed this advice and it seems to work for her. Cristina Cukypheffs@... Re: dry cough--need HELP!! Guest guest
We go through the dry cough this time of the year, not only a but me too. I strongly suggest that you get fenergan with codeine and only should be given at night to go to sleep with a little food, so it won't hurt his stomach. Talk to your CF doctor, you and your son need to sleep to get better. The tree tea oil inhalations work like a charm, too, but he is young and you have to be careful he does not burn himself. You can get the steamy water and put it high around him in the room where he is sleeping. Two weeks ago a had a really bad spell and during the day we did the trea tea oil inhalations and really made her feel better. Good luck. mom of a 10 wcf, Venanzio 7 nocf, Pepe 3 nocf > My 28 month old son has had a dry cough for 36 hours. It started with > an alergy from ragweed or something. Guest guest
jennifer, my son,15, suffers from the same dry, allergy cough. here are some things we do:--elevate the head of bed a bit(helps sinus drainage) ,cool-mist humidifier(makes the air moist) and a steam bath before bed. when none of that works we do a saline neb w/ the mask about every 2 hours thru' the night dani-mom of 15yr.old w/cf 17 yr.old w/out cf
Guest guest
I know this is going to sound silly but we use the old home remedy no medicine just plain old Chicken broth /soup.This one has the scientists stumped they can't figure what is in it that helps sooth a dry throat and helps dry up mucous and it is warm and Yummy to their tummies.BeckyB.-Mama to 8-2w/cf --Nana to
Guest guest
He keeps swallowing mucus and it makes him > cough. Any ideas, fixes, suggestions Whenever my son gets an dry persistant cough (ie coughing every minute or less) it has always been due to a sinus infection that is discharging thick mucus down the back of his throat stimulating the cough. I ease the cough temporarily by letting him suck on a hard candy or cough drop but the only way to get rid of the cough is a three week treatment of Ceftin. jan
