Hi, I haven't been in the group for a couple months. I have Eddie, 8

and Greg, 6. Both with CF.

Crazy summer. Got married, moved, new school and new nurses to deal

with at the schools.

My question is are fireplaces okay to use in a house with CF kids?

I never had a fireplace until now and was just wondering if anyone

has one and uses it with no problem to their childrens lungs.

Hi ,

I don't know if anyone else has responded about fireplaces. I think it

really depends on the individual (even those without respiratory

problems).

It's wise to have the fireplace checked regularly -- make sure there

are no cracks, leaks, and that the flue is kept clean so smoke and ash

won't back up into the house. Never use green wood because it produces

more smoke (and doesn't burn well).

If your fireplace has glass doors, this will help keep some of the

minute particles from getting into the house, but keeping the doors

closed isn't all that cozy at times.

grew up with a fireplace and did just fine. I questioned his CF

doctor and allergy/asthma doctor about the fireplace -- believe me,

they two folks were really cautious people -- and they said they did

not have a problem with it unless started having a problem with

it. They were actually MORE concerned that we not have a gas cooking

range and gas heat in the home.
