Guest guest
Tonya, Please let us know exactly what he's eating. Constipation is not uncommon in the beginning. This is a big change from what his body was used to, no doubt. Have you tried giving him a magnesium supplement? Magnesium Citrate usually helps a lot. Are you using any of the nut flour muffins? Patti severe constipation We have been on the SCD for about 6 weeks now. Since we started this diet our ASD son (4 yrs old) has developed severe constipation. He will not go unless I give him Baby Lax. The glycerin supp have not worked nor has the suggestions on BTVC listserve. Before the diet he was regular with slightly loose stools. It really makes no sense since he is eating so much better now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Tonya
Guest guest
He is on Mag Citrate and has been since Jan. He will not eat the muffins yet but we still try. He eats raisins, apples, Applesauce, bananas, apple juice, most meats and hardly any veges unless they are hidden in his meat. My next idea is to boil down prune juice to get prune nectar and give it to him in a syringe. I am not sure how much though. It is really good to hear this is not an uncommon problem though. Thank you so much for your help!! > > Tonya, > > Please let us know exactly what he's eating. > > Constipation is not uncommon in the beginning. Guest guest
Tonya, Just FYI.... apples and bananas are both considered to be somewhat " binding " ... in other words, they help firm up the stool, and help relieve diarrhea. If he's constipated, this could be one reason. Eating " hardly any veggies " is not a good thing. It would certainly help to get in more... squash, green beans, etc. You may need to get really creative with the sneaky recipes to get more veggies in. I know this is hard... as many, many other parents here will tell you... they've struggled with this as well, but there are ways. Have you tried any " smoothies " ? You could potentially get a wider variety of foods into him, hidden in smoothies.... if he likes things like that (frozen, milkshake-like). You can start with a base of homemade coconut milk and add chunks of cooked, frozen fruits... peaches might be a good choice right now. Then you can *sneak* in increasing amounts of something like pureed butternut squash... almost undetectable! Some kids like " green smoothies " , with avacado and banana... in which case, if they'll accept that, you can start sneaking in a little bit of pureed green beans or spinich, etc. By the way, if your son has only been on SCD for six weeks, it is TOO SOON for raisins or other dried fruit. That could really impair his progress. Are you also using raw apple? All fruits and veggies need to be peeled and cooked (except ripe banana or avacado) at this point.
