Guest guest
Hi everyone, Could any of you tell me if your kids ever get the " common cold " ???? started with a cough about 3 weeks ago, he started on Cipro and ended after 14 days on Tuesday. On Wednesday we started Zithromax again, he is on this 3 times a week as a preventative. Wednesday night while he was sleeping he started with a wet cough again. I called the CF center Thursday morning, finally got ahold of the fellow Thursday evening. He said that we were going to start Augmentin, Cipro is a good drug but maybe it missed something. (Oh yeah, and the treatments have been increased for the duration, the vest twice a day and manual cpt when he is in school. Luckily his nurse is wonderful.) If the cough isnt better by Saturday then call and bring him in to be seen. Well the cough is worse, so I call the fellow on call this morning, tell him everything that he has been through the past month, he says ok bring him in, he calls the ER and tells them to expect him. After reiterating everything again, I am told that he has a common cold, bring him home and continue the Augmentin, it could be viral so the antibiotics wont help. So being a mom I ask " if its viral and the antibiotics wont help then why would I keep giving him the antibiotics " , know what I was told, " it may be bacterial so keep giving them " , I told her that made no sense at all, then the resident asked if I wanted to talk to the attending again. I told her I wanted to talk to somebody that knew what the hell they were talking about, but I was sure there wasnt anyone around who fulfilled that requirement. I asked her if she realized that he had cystic fibrosis, and that he doesnt get a common cold. I was told, " I sympathize with you, and I am sure you are frustrated " yeah that made better. I told her that this happens every year at this time and he ends up in the hospital. And here we are, at home again. So my question is this, have any of your kids just had a " common cold " , am I just overreacting, or should I assume that I know what I am talking about and believe that they are just people who should find a new profession????? Thanks for listening, , mommy of 4, 4 wcf
Guest guest
Yes, Savannah does get the common cold. What is so frustrating is that after the 10 day wait she now has a bacterial infection as well. Our Dr. will wait 10 days before running any test to make sure it's not viral. At this time in her care we don't do any preventive antibiotics because he would like to see if Savannah immune system will kick in. I know it's very frustrating. I'll keep you in our prayers. Guest guest
Hi , My twins have gotten common colds, and they actually tend to do better with them than I do. They're usually gone in about 3 days. That said, however, I NEVER take colds for granted, since they can end up as pneumonia, or lead to dehydration, so easily in our kids. Whenever Mick or Alli get any cold symptoms, I march them over to their pediatrician for a throat culture to make sure they aren't growing anything bacterial. They get their ears checked, a sputum sample, and are usually sent off with some antibiotic like cipro or augmentin, just in case, and then if they do grow out something, like pseudomonas, they get the appropriate antibiotic at that time. Otherwise, if it's viral, we give them plenty of extra fluids, plenty of rest, treat symptoms with children's tylenol and motrin, and wait it out. Don't accept a shrug and a guess that it's viral. Make sure they do either a throat culture, or if your cf center does them, a blood test, for bacterial infections. Some places even do broncoscopies, but I'm not sure when they consider that procedure appropriate. What you can do now is give tons of extra fluids anyway. You'd be surprised at how often dehydration can creep up on your cf child and knock them out with severe symptoms like fevers and listlessness, when they only started out with a " common cold " . Good luck to you and I hope is feeling better soon. C Mommy to Mick and Alli, 3.5 yo twins wcf
Guest guest
, a my 10 year old with cf, does get the common cold, but her doctor will put her on Cipro or Augmentin, before it goes the bacterial way. Because is viral it takes her longer to get better, meaning the virus has to run its course. I would like to point out that Zithromax is not being given to act as an antibiotic but rather as an anti-inflamatory agent. Another thing that I would like to tell you is that I hate ER's, even before a was diagnosed the only times that I took one of my kids to the ER, was when Venanzio my 7 year old no cf, fell and hurt his head, another time he hurt his leg and yet another time he busted his chin. My theory is that not only I have to see a resident doctor but it is a place that is full of sick kids therefore I will most likely be exposing my kid to other ills. I feel like ER's are no place for kids with cf. mom of a 10 wcf, Venanzio 7 nocf, Pepe 3 nocf > Hi everyone, > > Could any of you tell me if your kids ever get the " common cold " ???? > started with a cough about 3 weeks ago, he started on Cipro and ended > after 14 days on Tuesday. Guest guest
I really wish they would do some preventive measures .He doesn't think that CF is going to go away too.......immune defiencey is part of it. Guest guest
Hi , The only time has ever gotten a " common cold " she has ended up in the hospital. A certain pulmonary fellow (who is now rather good with kids and parents) told me in a rather condescending tone that " well, CF kids get colds just like everyone else " I called 's CF doc the next day because I knew this was getting to be more than just a cold. follow your instincts. Guest guest
, Our son is almost 4 years old and I, too, struggle during the fall and spring with the " cold " issue. Our son has seasonal allergies and I really struggle with is it a cold or just allergies. Have they ruled out seasonal allergies for your son? My son's allergies don't always respond well to allergy meds and he always has a nasty sounding cough. Our CF Clinic is recommends with a cold that we increase clapping and breathing treatments to 3 times a day vs twice a day and that we treat the cold symptoms. Since antibiotics won't cure a cold they don't prescribe antibiotics until we see worsening signs such as running a fever for several days, lack of appetite, being crabby or significant inability to sleep. As frustrating as it is, it I have to admit that if we see these signs of getting worse and then start the antibiotics we usually start seeing immediate signs of improvement. The clinic's thoughts are a virus needs to run its course, but if a bacterial infection is starting then we want to start treating it as soon as possible. We have made the decision that this winter when we start cold season we will discuss using pulmozyme. The Clinic's thoughts are that with a cold we may need to be more aggressive on getting the mucus thinned out and moved out, making the environment for a bacterial infection less inviting. That all said, last spring was the worst one we've had. We went from a cold in mid-February on to ear infections, croup, ear infections, roto virus and then allergy season. It seemed like he had something, back to back, from mid-February until May. I was incredibly frustrated (and tired) and he was getting so run down I could tell he felt pretty miserable. Fortunately, I'm able to stay home with him, so I kept him home a lot during the end of April through May so that he could get plenty of rest and get his system built back up before being exposed again. He started to lose weight the beginning of May and I know if we hadn't been able to turn that around quickly, we would have been hospitalized. I scared of the coming cold/flu season and already frustrated because his allergies are so bad - if you get any wonderful pieces of advice, please pass them on. Some days I wonder how we'll ever get him through school. Good luck, 's " common cold " Hi everyone, Could any of you tell me if your kids ever get the " common cold " ???? started with a cough about 3 weeks ago, he started on Cipro and ended after 14 days on Tuesday.
