Guest guest
Hi, First I want to thank everyone who sent is cards while she was in the hospital. She was so excited to get mail on a daily basis. Also to everyone who answered all my questions about home IV's. I have printed off all the information and have saved it for later reference. We didn't come home on IV's. is was in for ten days. The doctors are saying it was more asthmatic than CF. The question is she came home on Tuesday and still has a bit of cough. With Asthma does the cough seem to linger and if so how long can it go on for? is is normally coughfree and having asthma has made things more difficult. Her doctor started her on pulmicort. We are also starting on Monday Zithromycin on Mon, Weds, and Fri. What results have you seen if any for your children that are on it? She will be returning to school on Monday and I would love any info to help keep her healthy. She washes her hands all of the time and Her teacher tries to keep her from sitting to close to anyone with a cold but she is in first grade and all of her little friends love to hug. Also you parents out there with more than one with CF I admire you tremendously. I have no idea how you keep it altogether. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me. Guest guest
Hi Dottie, Glad to read is is back home. Since she'll be starting Zithromycin on a maintenance basis, you'll likely want to start her on a probiotic too, especially since she just fininshed a round of IV antibiotics. The probiotic will help maintain the normal flora in her intestines. This is so important. Also, know that the Pulmocort and Zithromycin will deplete her of magnesium, which is likely already depleted due to IV antibiotics. So if she's not taking a magnesium supplement, now is the time to start. This is probably the reason you're seeing asthma symptoms (wheezing, continued coughing) after hospital intervention. I wouldn't be surprised if her PFT scores were now a bit lower even after antibiotics instead of higher. People with asthma routinely test lower in magnesium than people without asthma, but when you correct magnesium deficiency, then bronchoconstriction resolves. We use Solgar amino acid chelate (magnesium glycinate) because it has a higher bioavailability (reaches the cells) than other forms of magnesium. I'm still waiting to hear when and IF the Florida CF Pharmacy will be able to carry it. I thought they were going to, then got a call that they couldn't, then another call saying they're still looking. In the meantime, here's a link for it at a very good price: http://www.houseofnutrition.com/m1.html The tablets are large, and I realize she's just six. But you can cut the tablets into halves, thirds, or fourths if necessary. I'd give her at least two each day (in divided doses), three when symptoms are very high, along with a good quality, complete multivitamin/mineral. If you're only relying on ADEKs, it's an incomplete vitamin and won't fulfill the minimum daily requirements of vitamins or minerals. Also, don't give magnesium or any minerals at the same time as antibiotics. The two compete for the same receptor site on cells and minerals usually beat out the antibiotics. Take vitamins/minerals early in the day, or throughout the day, and give her the Zithromycin at night. However you choose to do it, be sure you have a 2-hour window: take magnesium no sooner than 2 hours after last antibiotic. Best to you, Kim --- " Dottie " <jedo@a...> wrote: > Hi, > First I want to thank everyone who sent is cards while she was in the hospital. She was so excited to get mail on a daily basis.
