Guest guest
Yes I agree 100% and that is why I don't think you should leave....even if you just write once in a while for emotional support...we ALL need it. Guest guest
Who could I get to evaluate him besides a child psychiatrist? There is only one anywhere near here. He is the one that did this latest evaluation. Unfortunately my sons home based counselor isn't convinced he has AS either but I just can't believe all his difficulties are caused by what his current diagnoses are. Guest guest
Thanks! I think I will stay. I've been thinking over the diagnoses and the problems my son has and I just can not accept that everything he is dealing with is because of those. At home other than the aggression I don't really notice he is different because I am used to him but in public or just around other people the differences are glaringly obvious. Guest guest
> > Who could I get to evaluate him besidesa child psychiatrist? There is only one anywhere near here. A good choice is a neuropsychologist with a specialty in ASDs. You can find such specialists at the nearest regional children's hospital or private specialized clinics. They can help you pinpoint his executive dysfunction a lot more precisely than a psychiatrist. If you don't live in a major urban area, you may indeed have to travel, so you should be prepared for that. It is also hard to match such specialists up with your insurance, and some don't even take insurance, and some insurance plans don't cover it anyway. In any case, you can also expect a long waiting list in many cases. We had to wait 8 months for our initial diagnostic evaluation, and another month after that for the neuropsych eval. If you post your location, someone on the list might be able to help you locate someone. Ruth

Guest guest
As far as I knew ...Nothing....really both are the same...maybe some people use HFA (high function autism) as their child's IQ might be higher but according to one of the books I have ...AS and HFA are the same in one. Guest guest
My son who definitely has Aspergers has never done any hand flapping. And, “flicking his ears a lot” could be a stimming behavior. My son can show affection when he chooses to, has a great imagination that used to primarily involve his obsessions, and interacts with others (years ago most of his interactions were not appropriate but this has improved to being mostly appropriate). I did have a psychologist tell me one time that my son wasn’t Aspergers because he had a sense of humor! Of course, in this guy’s defense this happened years ago before even professionals knew much about the disorder. And, to be honest, I am not sure a psychiatrist is the best person to do the initial diagnosing on this. Aspergers should not be diagnosed in one encounter and requires an in-depth evaluation including a questionnaire for the parents and teachers to complete. I don’t remember if you said all these things were done or not. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of and Matt Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 9:22 AM Subject: Re: ( ) At a loss The psychiatrist said that since my son doesn't do any hand flapping (flicking his ears a lot doesn't count), shows affection easily, has a good imagination, and interacts with others he just doesn't fit the diagnosis. My son does interact with others but not well, he paces most of the day,he constantly repeats lines from movies and makes sounds his home based counselor says are vocal tics but the psychiatrist says are due to his extreme adhd, he has been fasinated with maps for 2 years now although he isn't any more knowledgeable than an average 6 year old, he rewinds movies to the same parts over and over, he's a wanderer, can't bathe without supervision, do buttons, snaps, or laces, he has a meltdown in public places even quiet ones like the library, and the list goes on. If he doesn't have a spectrum disorder then I don't know what else could be going on. His psychiatrist is convinced he isn't on the spectrum though. Guest guest
You are right...my son has a sense of humor...sometimes I think...maybe he should be a comedian!!! I know we at home did the tests as well as his teachers...it does give a good insight... My son did the hand flapping...that started when he was 4....he used to do it when he was excited...no one ever said anything to me about it...I use to point it out to everyone...I thought it was GREAT...Cute! It showed his EXCITEMENT about something...it showed his ENTHUSIASM!!!! He doesn't do it so much anymore but he does "wring his hands" when he is excited or he'll kinds flap his fingers.....I LOVE IT!!!!! It just shows how excited he can get!!!! Does your child or did your child have trouble eating soft foods...or white foods as a baby? My son's TSS said that was a sign too! I never knew it...my son would NEVER eat mashed potatoes (most babies love them), white pudding, youghrt, vanilla pudding, cottage cheese...it has something to do with the texture. Now at 11 years old ..he finally tried mashed potatoes and loves them ...but won't eat the other stuff. Interesting stuff, eh? Guest guest
My son has never met a food he didn't like. When he was a baby he went through physical therapy due to being so heavy his upper muscles didn't strengthen.
