The Welch's 100% juice is fine, and so is apple cider. Make sure to dilute

them both. I have been giving my autistic son these since starting scd, and

he was just under three years.

Yes, it is legal. It is natural sugar from the grapes and not added

sugar.

> is it better to not give an autistic child apple cider?

It is best to give them whichever they tolerate. You can try both and

note any reactions. Make sure that both are diluted with at least

half water. Although they are natural sugars at the beginning of the

diet to much of a hit of natural sugar can be hard on the sensitive

system.

Only bad if you can't tolerate them. After the intro peeled, deseeded

cooked apples are good to try until symptoms start to improve.

Here's a list of legal commercial juices:

-Tropicana Pure premium OJ

-Dole pineapple juice

-Heinz and 's Tomato juice

-The Knudsen's *Just Juice* line (not the rest of their products):

Just Black Cherry

Just Blueberry

Just Cranberry

Just Pomegranate

Organic Just Concord Grape

Organic Just Tart Cherry

-Kedeem grape juice

-Welch's 100% Grape juice (Red, Purple and white)

*Don't forget to dilute these*

Make sure you're buying the Welch's grape juice in BOTTLES, not the frozen....

they DO add sugar to the frozen kind.

If any parent wants to avoid giving their child apples or apple cider, they may

do so.... but they are not " bad " in terms of SCD. They are legal. If there are

other reasons why you want to avoid any particular food... because your child

reacts to it or whatever... that's up to you.

I just want to clarify once again.... that " apple cider " is legal... but not

just ANY product that says " apple cider " on the label. The intention here is

that it needs to be the " fresh-pressed " type... cloudy, unfiltered, unprocessed,

with nothing added.... heated ONLY for the purpose of pasteurization.... and

capped. This type of cider will usually be found in the refridgerated section...

IF your store carries it at all. Farmer's markets are another good place to look

for fresh cider at this time of year.

There are some commercial, bottled " apple ciders " that really do not quite meet

those criteria... in other words, they may be unfiltered, look cloudy... and

the label may say apple cider... but they are found in glass bottles on the

regular grocery shelf, along with other juices. This is NOT what Elaine had in

mind... she wanted us to look for the fresh-pressed variety.

Another legal version of this would HOME-juiced apple juice.... made fresh with

your juicer and used immediately. This is what I use. Good quality juicers are

very expensive, but my cheapo one from the discount shelf at my hardware store

(for $24) does the job. Eliminates worrying about whether or not you've got a

" legal " apple cider.

Remember.....always dilute!

Hi I am pretty new to the group and to the diet so I still have many

questions. I read the list of legal juices that was listed and am a

little confused. I thought that any juice from concentrate was not

okay. All of the Just Fruit Juices are from concentrate so I was

wondering how they could be legal.

I was also wondering why citric acid would be legal since it is most

often from corn. My son has a Igg to corn and I have also been

afraid to use citric acid.

Please help clear these up for me.

Thanks so much

Hi Pam,

Welch's grape juice, in bottles... which is legal... IS from concentrate.

I think the confusion might be from the fact that we can't use canned fruits

(and other products) that are sweetened with fruit juice concentrates.... as in

the processing of those, it is a potential way for them to hide added illegals.

There is especially a problem with pear and apple juice when it is commercially

concentrated.

Citric acid is legal, even though it's from corn. Corn OIL is legal, too.

You don't have to use any food or additive that your child has a true allergy

to.
