Guest guest
Welcome to the list.... It sounds like you are quite overwhelmed with many different issues concerning his new diagnosis. Our list may not be able to help with all of those... but we do focus on the SCD here, and can help point you in the right direction in terms of the diet. In my opinion, SCD is the most important foundational thing you can do for him. I think it is vitally important for you to read the book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, by Elaine Gottschall.... before you take another step. You simply MUST understand the science behind the diet. I can tell you must not have read it yet, if you're asking if rice milk and soy milk are illegal or not (they're not). Order the book right away.... and don't worry, it's a quick read. The first 60 pages explain everything in detail...you can read that part in a day or two... the rest of the book is recipes. If you're in an urgent hurry to get started reading it, I think you can read at least the first two chapters online at amazon.com. Be sure to read the www.pecanbread.com website thoroughly. There is a section there on " Picky Eaters " .... specifically because so many ASD kids began this diet as picky eaters. You might be relieved to know that MANY of them have surprised their parents and become much more accepting of new foods once on SCD for a while. Once you understand that some of the foods he's now eating (virtually ALL of the " snacks " you listed) are hurting him... and causing more damage to his gut, you will be excited to find new alternatives that are SCD legal. Don't worry... there are plenty of snack ideas that are delicious. You'll find that almost all SCD food will need to be prepared from scratch... there are not many pre-made products that we can use. This might *seem* like a lot of work at first... but it becomes second nature. The jarred baby foods are not legal... but it's easy to make pureed fruits and veggies that he will enjoy just as much (and you'll be saving money, too.... jarred baby food is very expensive!). So... please read the book, and the website, and don't worry. You are SO lucky to be starting SCD so early... and so soon after his diagnosis. The younger kids tend to respond very quickly. Patti 29 mos old son just diagnosed ASD, what to eliminate from diet?? this is my 1st post. my 29 mos old son was just diagnosed ASD and i have been scrambling around trying to figure out how to get him help fast. i decided to get him on nystatin but his pediatrician talked me into diflucon so he has been on it for 2 wks but i am going to have him change to nystatin tomorrow. i don't think i should stop or the yeast may grow back stronger. i decided to try the SCD instead of gfcf diet but not add dairy, fish with mercury or apples. he is such a picky eater that this is going to very difficult. i don't even know what to eliminate from his limited diet right now. he still only eats baby jar food and snacks (cornpops, cheerios, scooters, cocoa puffs, rice krispies, graham crackers, potato chips). i have stopped the milk altho i feel horrible for letting him drink so much cows milk since he was 1 yrs old. he will only drink v. diluted juices now and refused almond milk. i am not sure if rice milk or soy milk are illegal and what my other beverage options are. what should i eliminate immediately from his diet?? it looks like everything might be illegal. should i introduce a new food everyday? i know he will just toss it on the floor. he is so stubborn that he will go on a food strike for a week if he doesn't get what he is used to. we have tried this before. i have an appt with a DAN doctor in october who told me to start him on SCD. i think i need to have a DAN doctor to prescribe supplements and b12 shots, etc. i am not sure if just changing his diet is enough. i think i will need to make sure he is getting the vitamins and minerals, etc. that he is lacking from his diet too. what tests are the most important to do at the beginning? this doctor wants $300 for DNA test. is that necessary? i guess i need some reassurance that i am heading in the right direction. does anyone know how much all the supplements and shots, etc will end up costing us per month and if insurance will cover any of them. is it a matter of not using the diagnosis code of autism? i heard most insurance companies won't pay for these procedures and supplements if they think it is for autism. Guest guest
Let me start by asking you to consider the list of foods that you say are most common in your child's diet. Cherios, potato chips, ect. are not very high in nutritional value. Your son will be much better off from a health stand point by switching to scd. I can tell you this because my son was eating almost only grains products prior to scd 5 months ago. He would eat fruit, an occassional vegie, no meat, but any bread, rice, pasta, chip, ect. that I would offer him. Many children are stubborn when you change their eating habits, but a child will not starve themself. Sure, he may refuse the offered foods for several days, but he will eventually be hungry enough to give it a try. It doesn't sound like you have yet read the book by Elaine Gottschall called Breaking the Vicious Cycle which outlines how to implement the diet, and why it is so helpful. You also need to read the site www.pecanbread.com thoroughly. It has a wealth of information. This will tell you how to get started. I know that many people do delay beginning scd for months so that they can be well prepared with food items. I read the book in two days, read everything on the internet that I could, and got going. I was not more than two weeks from when I first heard of scd to when I started our son. Keep in mind that just about everything must be made from scratch...that means even items like applesauce, almond milk, ect. My personal opinion is that you can at least begin weening him from some of the foods while you're learning about scd. For example, I would guess that most of the beverages that he is getting are what we would call " illegal " , meaning that you should not be using them if you follow scd. Apple cider is all right though, not apple juice. You could switch him to diluted cider right now. Also, Welch's 100% grape juice is also OK. Remember that juices should always be diluted. So, just start with something simple if you want like that. Keep reading, and I would definitely encourage you to get started right away. Regarding other intervention, I can tell you that our insurance does cover prescriptions for B12 and other prescription supplements. It does not cover most of our supplements since they are not by prescription. Our insurance also does not cover our dan doctor. It does cover speech therapy as well as occupational therapy, but no behavioral therapy like ABA or RDI. All that to say, check with your isnurance provider. Even if you don't think that they will cover something, submit the claim anyway. We do pay for a lot of our son's treatment out of pocket, and it is certainly financially taxing. However, we have seen so much improvement over the past five months that we wouldn't change it for a thing. Feel free to email me off list of you want to talk, vent, or whatever. I'm glad to encourage anyone that I can, and listen to their stresses. Guest guest
Yes, your son has a wonderful chance at such an early age! And I'm glad to see that you are already on the road to getting him help. I didnt find my son had a problem until he was 4 and we didn't get him the real help he needed until later on. I have heard of a few children recovering at such an early age. And Breaking the Vicious Cycle is a wonderful book, I wish I had found it earlier. Have you ever considered raw goat's milk? There's a link for it on the pecanbread website. You will be able to find people in your area who sell it... Our DAN! used dx's of gastroenteritis, malabsorption syndrome, efa deficiancy, b12 deficiancy and a few others as we tested (some of which was out-of-pocket) and got results. " Autism " is a catch-all word imo, and as you find out what PHYSICAL causes are the root of your child's issue, it is likely that at least some of it will be picked up by ins. -christine
