Guest guest
Dear Melody, there is a supportive web site, not as good as the MGB one but at least it's there, and it's for open RNY folks. The site is called Obesity Surgery Support Group, and they have local chapters. Mine is the NY area chapter, even though I live in Philly. I will be able to have the MGB, I hope, but at first I was unsure of what I wanted or even if I wanted any of this, and so I have been watching both sites. There's good info on both that can apply to both groups. I am sorry that you can't be an MGB'er, but what matters is that you get healthy. It doesn't matter how you get there. Right? Please, go to that site as well as this one. You'll learn good stuff. :-) Judy
Guest guest
Melody, Please hang in there. All is not loss. On my computer screensaver I have written " All things are possible though Christ who strengthens me " It has help me to deal with the fact that I may never be eligible to have this surgery either. My situation is a little different and less hopefully than yours. I have co-morbidities that made me look at WLS options. I have chronic HBP, Fibromuscular Dsyplasia, chronic fatigue and borderline Diabetes I have always thought I was too heavy and have always dieted. However, when I started looking for a way to reduce my BP and have a better quality of life, I found out that I am not heavy enough for the surgery. I have talked with my insurance company and they sent me guidelines which state I must be 50% or 100lbs overweight w/medical problems. Well, I am not 100lbs overweight. My PCP put me on Xenical to lose weight before he would follow me for the surgery. When I go to him and tell him in the 4 wks he has had me on this I have only lost 3 lbs, I am sure he will come up with another reason not to follow me. LOL It was to pacify me. All things are possible w/Christ. I have decided that I will go though the research, and pre-cert, and everything else trusting that Jesus will see me though this and make a way. No one but him truly knows what pain I am in. See this is not only about being overweight. I am terrified that I will eventually end up with kidney failure because of the problems with my blood pressure which has been as high as 200/110. No joke. I don't have all the answers, but I do know what it is like to want something to help yourself and to feel like it will never happen. Hang in there. Your life is worth it. Guest guest
Melody, Good luck with your RNY. My oldest sister (55) had the RNY done July, 99 and has lost 150 lbs to date. She weighed 370 at surgery is doing really well. I am choosing the MGB because I weight 295 and fit the criteria. If you have any questions about the RNY, let me know and I'll get an answer from her. Her name is Randy. Again good luck! Rebekah in Alabama
Guest guest
Melody - Before you give up on the MGB, and we really don't want you to cause you're a sister of ours, has anyone told you about Fanney (one of Icelandic Warrior Princesses) who started at 550. She went on the Adkins plan (20 gr. carbs and all the protien she could handle) and Dr. R. did the MGB on her when she weighed 400. Alot depends upon your body build and, I know this sounds like a silly question, but has Doc R. seen you yet? If you are close, I'd come to clinc and let him get a good look at you. I am a diehard optimist (sp) and I firmly believe in you and your determination to make yourself healthy. If it all turns out that you have to get another form of weight loss surgery, it's better the RNY than most of the other non-MGB options out there. Or, perhaps Doc R. would consider doing the MGB as an open procedure on you??????????? Never hurts to ask. -Ginny I. mgb: 3/1/00 348/254 (am withing sneezing distance of having 100 lbs. gone!!!) > I am going to the doc next week so i can get approved for the rny. Guest guest
Hi. As sorry as I am that Dr. R can't help you, I must say that I am REALLY glad that you are going to have weight-loss surgery. I know that I could never lose 75 pounds on my own! Most of us on the list have at one time or another consulted with other physicians before finding the MGB website. I was also going to have an open RNY, not knowing that there was a lap option. I found two good lap surgeons, one doing the RNY and the other doing the MGB(Dr. R.) At 278 pounds, I went with Dr. Rutledge. I see so many people go away from this list discouraged because they are not within the weight qualifications for the MGB. I feel for them, because there are other options. ANY other reputable surgical option is better than doing nothing about the excess weight. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Please do stay on the list and keep us posted on you progress. Again, Congratulations. Stormy MGB 8/11/00 > I am going to the doc next week so i can get approved for the rny. Guest guest
Melody, I really feel for your position. Don't know what area of the country you are in but if you haven't done so I would look for a physician who will do a lap RNY. I realize that you would rather have the MGB but if I were faced with the other alternative, the RNY, I would have to think long and hard about the open procedure. There is a physician in Atlanta - Dr. Champion - that I know does the lap procedure and I think you might qualify for his weight limit. He has a web - www.drchampion.com I think. on Surgery date 10/04/00 BMI 49 soon to be I hope! -- In MiniGastricBypass (AT) egroups (DOT) com, Melody <leilmotif@w...> wrote: > I am going to the doc next week so i can get approved for the rny. Guest guest
Hey, this reminds me, I know a GREAT support group on onelist called MillenniumBobs (AT) egroups (DOT) com Most of the people on the list have had open RNY's and there a a lot of pictures in the " files " section. I just LOVE that support list. It is really as good as this one. Mind you, I still want to see you posting here, but I was thinking that you may need some advice from people who have been there with the open surgery. Let me know how you like it. Guest guest
One of the hard line rules I live by is...Just ask! And I did...I was told he does not do the open at all and he will no longer do people over 350lbs. I am sure you know we have all tried every diet out there. I could open a book store and sell diet books and have a great business with all the ones I have. I have tried EVERYTHING and I do mean everything. From no carb to low cal to all protein to cabbage three times a day everyday to bananas and milk only. Some of the crap I have tried is just down right amazing and I cannot loose the 75lbs needed. I have watch Lara on here and was encourage by her progress and thought...OK I can do this...I didn't. I dont think being upset and depressed and discouraged is good. That is almost worse than the weight. I have been so upset abt having to loose this weight to have the MGB I was throwing up from the stress...and I am a laid back person to start. The only good side of that was the weight loss but not the sick feeling and head aches and my poor BF should have asked me to leave after some of the fits I had. I dont mind crying over a sappy AT & T commercial but to walk around with swollen eyes from depression is not for me. I appreciate Stormy for the encouragement and saying the RNY as a second option is better than living with the 423 lbs and raising. And it is going up. I was so shocked when I saw how much I weighed I had to hold onto the wall for a minute. I went out side and spent the next 1/2 hour in my car crying. I am to good for this and love life to damb much. I want to have kids, see them have kids and if I am as lucky as my great great grandmother and great grandmother I can be the head of a five generation picture. The family matriarch. There is nothing more in the world I would like than to have the MGB other than to just be a normal weight. I dont want to be Twiggy or even considered skinny but I do want to sit in the seat of the next OU vs OSU stadium with my bf. I want to get on that coater next year at the fair and have the bar fit. I dont even get in line now so I am not asked to get off because I dont fit. There is this cute, sexy, amazing " dream dress " in the back of my closet for the day I can fit into it. It isn't a little size either but a 14/16. Once I get this fat ass into that dress I am on the next plane to Jamaica for two weeks in the sun and surf and little else...lol. I can see the BF cringing now. OK, now that I have go on and on...kind a like the energizer bunny I should stop. You dont see me post much but by the gods when I do.... Guest guest
Melody, If it were me and I could not have the surgery because of being over 350 I would certainly have the RNY no two ways about it. Dr. R. must have a valid reason for not doing the MGB on persons over 350. I was impressed by his mounds of research data as was my own doctor. It is not personal I am sure, if he felt comfortable working with people over 350 then I bet he would do this. But it must be a solid medical reason for this. I would hate to have a surgeon who thinks he can just work on anyone. The RNY does work from what I have seen, look at Carnie . It seems to me that looking at your options you may need to choose the RNY. There are many qualified surgeons around the U.S. and maybe they can do the Lap procedure on you so you don't have the scar. I agree with you, I personally would not torture myself with trying to loose 75 pounds. The most I could ever loose was 40 and I am not going to put myself through diet hell again. I look at any of the procedures as a " stop gap " measure. I am slowly gaining year after year. If I can stop this then I feel I already 50% there. Any further losses are all gravy. But the gaining MUST stop. Hope my 2 cents helps. Las Vegas, NV preop selfpay 290. Melody wrote: > One of the hard line rules I live by is...Just ask! We are similar in that I, too, have no choice but to have another WLS since my age is against me having the MGB surgery. Guest guest
I have actually met a man here in OK at a support group meeting who had the surgery by Dr. Champion. His weight loss was incredible!!! He had lost 150 lbs at 6 months!!! Yes......150 in 6 months (not a misprint). Just thought I would tell you that!!!
