As long as the ham has no added sugars... no maple syrup or anything... only

pork and salt... then it sounds legal to me.

No.... we don't soak our nuts. Elaine did not want anyone on SCD to pre-soak

nuts. There may be some comments on her website, if you do a search.

I buy my nut flour.... and also nut butters. I do grind my own walnuts and

pecans for certain recipes... but I can't get it fine enough to serve as a

flour, and have not been successful making my own nut butter with the food

processer I have.

You *can* make your own, if you want to... but it's certainly not required.

Lucy's Kitchen Shop has wonderful almond flour... www.lucyskitchenshop.com

I buy nut butter in the regular grocery store... the " old fashioned " style

peanut butter (with only peanuts and salt)... and hazlenut, cashew, macadamia,

and almond butter in the natural foods store.

Questions... Ham and nuts!

<<i was wondering if the ham / bacon i buy would be allowed on SCD. it is only

made with pork and salt, has absolutely no additives... >>

<<do you all soak and dry your nuts to get rid of

enzyme inhibitors? if so, i imagine you would make your own nut flour rather

than buy it. what does this mean re:nut butters>>

hi patti,

thanks for the reply! so if its legal - is there a limit to how much

it can be eaten? i usually alternate between ham and tuna in my

daughters omelette / scrambled egg so she eats 2 slices every second

day... i was so excited to see this product and she does love ham!!!

I don't know of any limit to the amount of a legal meat.... but of course, you

need to balance the diet with plenty of veggies, fruits and other legal foods.

Are you sure the tuna you're using is free of illegals? I've found most brands

contain something they call " broth " .... in which lots of illegals, and MSG

(legal, maybe... but icky!) can be hiding.

I prefer to use canned Alaskan salmon.... in just water and salt. A bit spendier

but less worry over mercury and illegals. Not sure if you are in the U.S.?? If

not, maybe your tuna is processed/canned differently than ours?

hi patti,

we are in sydney australia and i buy tuna in olive oil with salt -

nothing else added. i am assuming this would be fine because olive

oil is allowed. i have travelled to the states many times and figure

it would be so tricky to get things plain and simple as everything is

'new and improved flavour!'... we were there for 3 months and i

loved the food but it was during that trip that i first started to

become aware of some severe IBS symptoms from all the processed foods

and additives!

i will look into the canned salmon - i got an email recently about

that. i did think that the school tuna that they used in cans was

less likely as contaminated with mercury because it swims closer to

the surface - is that true???

Fish canned in oil or water is legal. This is fine.

Roweena,

Your tuna sounds fine. :) I agree... American manufacturers are too inclined

to add weird flavor-enhancers and other chemicals to our food. Very frustrating!

And labeling laws let them slip all kinds of nasties under the radar.

I am not sure about the mercury issue... I just avoid all tuna here. Salmon

from Alaska is pretty readily available to me because I live in the Pacific

Northwestern U.S. ... and we LOVE wild salmon. My husband is going fishing

this weekend and will hopefully bring home a big one! :)
