I talked to my pharmacist about this. I've had so many prescriptions

filled pre and postop - we're on a first name basis!

Anyhow, as the patient manual indicates, Dr.R prescribes Vioxx for

pain. My pharmacist told me that for headaches, menstrual cramps,

fever, etc. that this was really about the best thing available for

folks like us. Vioxx is not without possible side effects, but it's

safety profile is better than any ibuprophen or sodium naproxen

compounds.

All the best,

Debbie

For all of you who asked about the tylenol and for Cindy about the

migraines and Imitrex, I was at clinic Tues and asked all those

questions because I have migraines and in addition to taking Imitrex

probably own stock in Excedrin, Tylenol, etc.

His answer is that Imitrex and all drugs in that family are fine.

Hooray!!!! Codine-related pain medications are also fine. You will

need to work with your support physician to get help for pain other

than tylenol and aspirin-related products. Dr. R. stresses that you

can certainly do whatever you like, but that studies have shown that

tylenol can be hard on your liver and you will want to be careful of

your liver after surgery since fast weight-loss can stress it (see

patient manual). In the case of the aspirin-related products, they

elevate the liklihood of ulcer (thus the healthy non-aspirin pain

reliever market) and again, surgery makes you slightly more

susceptible to ulcer. ---

By the way, did you know that a very large percentage of MGB post-ops

who suffered from migraines did not have them after the surgery???

Hope this helped. If you want more info about the migraines, which I

asked ALOT about, feel free to email me at AAnker14@...

Dr. R said that Imitrex is fine to take post-op. Sorry, I don't know about

Hydrocodone.

From clinic this past Tuesday, Dr R. said, (and repeated, lol) that

the drugs we are not to take are tylenol and anti-inflammatories

(aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) When asked about combination drugs, such

as percocet and tylenol #3, he said we can take the narcotic part of

those drugs without the tylenol. Example: Percocet is hydrocodone

and tylenol (acetaminophen). Get the hydrocodone prescription

without the tylenol. Same for tylenol #3...get a prescription for

codeine without the tylenol. The problem with this is that these are

narcotics and have a HIGH potential for abuse and dependance. But it

is possible to get pain medication other than tylenol and anti-

inflammatories.

Hope that helps.
