<< my question is are there any teens

JEELLOO@ AOL.COM is aged 18 and will be " doing the dance " on Oct 18th. I'm

sure there are lots of teens that have had this operation.

Hi folks-my daughter just turned 18 and we just sent her insurance

letter off. I wish we had read the suggestion to have pcp send it off

but we were anxious to get started. She is so excited and I hope she

wont be dissappointed by a denial. my question is are there any teens

out there that have had this operation? she has Ms Markham as one of

her main contacts and she is a real sweetie but she would like to

talk to someone younger (than 24 if you can imagine). Her weight is

235 at 5'4 " with BMI40. she just makes it but her teen years have

come with a lot of suffering as you can imagine. So everyone say a

little prayer and any info will be appreciated.

Dear Mom. My surgery is scheduled for next week. I'm 46. I know you

want the best for your daughter however, I am sorry, but I can not be

supportive. I believe that 18 is way too young to consider WLS. All

of us have tried many other ways to get healthy and lose weight

before

resorting to this big step. Most of us have had various success for

differing lengths of time. I had many years of very chubby but good

health and a full active life in my 20s and 30s. Your daughter is so

young - and there is much she can do for herself over the next years.

When she is an adult she may decide differently. Her age and her

emotions are not yet matured. This sounds so premature to me. In 10

or 15 years - when she has to pay for this, arrange it herself and

make her own decisions she may not choose this route. It is easy for

her to want this now (18 year olds are often impulsive and get

excited easily) and not really understand the implications because

she

is still a dependent teenager in your care. She may even lose her

baby

fat or bring it under control when she goes to college, meets a guy,

starts a career. Anyway, that is my strong feeling on the matter.

I

offer these feelings with all due respect and caring. Sincerely,

Deb LaManna and her teen age daughter had the

surgery in August. Deb's e-mail is

in touch with her daughter.

I printed off the Patient Education Manual and Dr.

R's paper and gave them to my doctor when I came

in to discuss the surgery. Others had suggested

getting those things to the doctor before you

appointment and asking him/her to read it before

the appointment so that you can discuss this

particular surgery with him/her. After my doctor

read it all, she called me and said she would

support me for the surgery - and seemed excited

for me. I then went in to have the physical,

history and tests I needed. Hope this helps,

Has to agree with whole-heartedly, I am 52 and I have tried many diets

over the years, I was also very active in my early twenties even with a weight

problem. This surgery is my last choice, but one that has to be made, because

now with menopause and my weight I am not moving hardly at all. The little I eat

is still too much when you don't move enough.

Your daughter should find an active way to help her either loose or maintain. My

daughter lost a great deal her first year of college, baby fat, or what and she

is active and healthier because of it.

Well Said, Dee!

I wouldn't wish for anyone to go even a day longer than they have to being

obese and

dealing with all that goes with it!

These girls are young and can avoid all of the problems and have many more

happy healthy years.

Dear Mom's request,

I happen to disagree with . My beautiful daughter, Karlie,

suffered horribly in high school due to her weight. She is 19 yrs.

old

and had an open RNY Aug 3rd. Unfortunately, due to her size, 450lbs,

declining health and having the wrong insurance, Tricare, she was

unable to have a MGB. This was our first choice for her, surgery wise

but it just wasn't ment to be. Anyway, she is doing fantastic! She

has

lost 80lbs, is no longer wheelchair bound, BP is normal, diabetes is

gone, pitting edema is gone, GERD is gone and so is her sleep apnea.

Emotionally she is doing so much better, too. She is making new

friends, having a social life and excelling in college. I just wish I

had had the nerve to help her sooner. Your daughter can e-mail Karlie

at powerlifter17@.... Suffering from physical and social

stigmans know no age, it is just as hurtful at 18 as it is at 40.

Blessings, Dee Trudell
