Guest guest
I never see if she is culturing anything first. For Patti, a cold leads to the inability to sleep, either from coughing or drainage or both. Giving her something like Benadryl to help her sleep (on the advice of her cf team) always leads to her nose running yellow or green...sure sign of infection there. So now I wait a day or two to see if it will play out. If she is still sick I call for an antibiotic. Guest guest
I have a teen with CF. We usually are able to let a cold run its course. IF the cold did not go away in 10-14 days or seemed to be getting significantly worse by the end of the first week or was causing distress, then I would consult our CF doc, and have a culture done. We haven't had to do that often (maybe a couple of times). Depending on severity of symptoms, we may or may not agree to start an additional antibiotic before getting the culture back. My son is on oral antibiotics at all times to control staph in his lungs and inhales Tobramycin. Perhaps he would react differently to colds if he was not on any antibiotics ... infection may set in more easily if he wasn't already on antibiotics ... I don't know. We treat colds in my son with CF with doses of guaifenesin to keep the mucous thinned and make it less likely to have infection take hold (just saw an abstract today that indicates guaifenesin is thought to increase sputum volume but reduce viscosity). We also add nebulized treatments of normal saline, using a mask rather than a mouthpiece to help bathe the nasal passages as well as the airways. At the first sign of a sore throat he starts sucking on zinc lozenges. We use only plain zinc lozenges to bathe the throat as I read once that Vitamin C can inhibit the effectiveness of the zinc and I don't think there is study on what Echinacea may do with the immune system in CF. A scientific study that found that 10 mg zinc lozenges can shorten the duration of a sore throat used the brand Ziggeez (Canadian name), called Coldeez (or something like that) in the U.S., so that is the brand we have relied on (though I am finding fewer pharmacies are carrying it lately). Guest guest
Hi Christen, We do sometimes but not if goes to her primary care doc. We have an HMO so we have to see her first sometimes. That doc doesn't know much about CF and always asks me what I think she should be on. I know what grew on her last culture so I know what she needs to be on. (usually) If that doesn't work I will call the CF center. I hope this helps, love,
